INDIANA, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team fell at No. 8 IUP, 80-56, on Sunday in PSAC men's basketball crossover action.
IUP improved to 5-0 on the year and 2-0 in PSAC play, while ESU's record evened up to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference.
ESU shot 27.4-percent from the floor on the day and hit 5-of-25 (.200) from three-point territory. The Crimson Hawks posted a 51.9-percent shooting performance after making 70.8-percent of their shots in the second half.
For the Warriors, Carlos Pepin led the way with 10 points and four rebounds. Montrel Morgan and Michal Weiss added eight points apiece, and Marc Rodriguez and Kitt Najee Walls each finished with seven.
IUP had four players in double-figures in the victory, led by Anthony White's game-high 16 points. Ethan Porterfield registered 14 points, and Malik Miller and Shawndale Jones each posted 13. Jones added 10 boards to record the double-double.
IUP held the Warriors to just one bucket in the opening seven-plus minutes of the contest as the Crimson Hawks jumped in front for the early advantage. After a dunk by Pepin for ESU's first basket of the game, IUP rattled off 13 straight points to grab a 16-2 advantage at the 12:16 mark. Porterfield and Chucky Humphries combined for nine of the team's points during the rally.
The Warrior offense started to get things going as Rodriguez and Pepin knocked down three-pointers in the ensuing two minutes to cut the ESU deficit to 21-10 at the midway mark of the half.
ESU then trimmed the IUP lead down to 10 points with 2:36 left in the half, but the Crimson Hawks closed out the stanza with a 9-1 run to take a 39-21 advantage into the halftime break.
ESU was held to a 6-of-30 (.200) shooting in the opening half, including a 3-for-16 (.190) clip from downtown. IUP shot 35-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from deep in the half.
The Warriors got the opening two baskets of the second half on a layup by Walls and a three from Morgan to make it a 13-point game, but IUP's hot shooting took over from there, as the Crimson Hawks built their lead up to 30 points, 59-29, at the 12:17 mark.
The Crimson Hawks continued to hold ESU at bay, as the Warriors weren't able to cut the deficit back under 20 from that point. IUP made 17-of-24 field goals in the second half for a 70.8-percent shooting performance in the frame, and the Crimson Hawks went on for the 80-56 victory to record remain perfect on the season at 5-0.
The Warriors are off from competition until December 2, when they travel for a tilt at Queens College at 7 p.m.
