EAST STROUDSBURG – Despite leading by 10 points with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball would be unable to record the upset against twenty-first ranked Adelphi on Sunday. The Panthers notched an 82-77 victory in overtime.
ESU (5-4) recovered from a slow start in the first quarter to take a 35-28 lead into the half after going 7-of-12 from the field in the second quarter. The Panthers were fueled by a 25-point fourth quarter as Adelphi connected on four 3-pointers to send the contest to overtime.
Senior
Jordan Hertz recorded her third career double-double for the Warriors as she finished with 10 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Senior
Dominique Rayam finished 6-of-6 from the field and notched a career-high 14 points to go along with seven boards for ESU, while redshirt-junior
Sadie Cresswell added 15 points and three 3-pointers. Senior
Tiffany Lapotsky finished with a team-high 19 points for ESU.
Trailing 17-14 to start the second quarter, junior
Abby Schoffstall and Lapotsky finished with back-to-back baskets to give the Warriors an 18-17 advantage. The Panthers worked to regain a four-point advantage following a jumper from Fallyn Stephens that made it 22-18 with 7:38 left to play.
With 3:53 left in the half, Lapotsky would knot the score at 24-24 for ESU following a layup off an assist from Hertz. The Warriors would then go on an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 35-26 with less than a minute left to play in the half. Adelphi closed the half with a layup from Phyness Baldwin to trim the deficit to 35-28.
ESU would build its lead to 42-33 with 6:22 left in the third quarter following a layup from redshirt sophomore
Julia Kutz. Adelphi rallied to cut the gap to 42-38 before the Warriors answered with another run to make it 47-38 with 4:10 left in the quarter. Rayam closed the scoring in the quarter for the Warriors as her layup with 35 seconds left gave ESU a 54-46 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Junior
Kaitlyn Swint hit a pair of free throws to increase the ESU lead to 56-46 with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter. Adelphi trimmed the ESU lead to 60-57 with 5:49 left in the contest as Katie Murphy connected on a trey for the Panthers. Four consecutive free-throws pulled the Panthers to within a point of the Warriors at 62-61 with 4:50 on the clock.
The Warriors rallied to push their lead to 71-63 with 1:59 left in the contest following a layup from Lapotsky. Adelphi had other plans to finish the contest as the Panthers used an 8-0 run to knot the score 71-71 and send the game to overtime.
ESU held an early lead in the extra frame as Rayam hit a jumper with 3:55 left on the clock to make it 73-72. A jumper from Leonie Edringer would give the Panthers the lead for good with 3:32 left on the clock. Rayam trimmed the deficit to 79-77 with 18 seconds left before the Panthers closed the contest with three points at the free-throw line to secure the 82-77 victory.
The Warriors are home on Dec. 20-21 with a pair of PSAC crossover matchups against Edinboro and Mercyhurst. Both contests will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
