EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Michal Weiss tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as he helped lead East Stroudsburg University to an 85-51 victory over Edinboro on Friday night in a PSAC crossover match at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Weiss was extremely efficient from the field, going 9-of-12 en route to his 18-point performance. The senior pulled down five boards on both ends of the floor to tie his career high with 10 total rebounds. Weiss has scored in double-figures in each of the last three contests while racking up a combined 49 points in the trio of games.
Joining Weiss in double-figures were Marc Rodriguez and Troy Jones. Rodriguez went 4-of-6 from three-point range, as he finished with 14 points to go along with three assists and three steals. Jones was a big contributor off the bench for the Warriors, registering 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
The Warriors shot 45.8-percent overall from the floor and knocked down 11-of-29 (.379) from long range. They held Edinboro to a 37-percent shooting night and limited the Fighting Scots to a 4-of-18 (.222) mark from downtown.
ESU held a 47-34 edge on the boards, and forced 23 turnovers by Edinboro, marking the sixth game this season with 20 or more turnovers forced by the Warriors.
With the victory, ESU improved to 6-3 overall and evened its conference record to 2-2, while Edinboro dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC.
After a relatively tight opening 10 minutes of the contest, the Warriors rallied for an 11-2 run in a span of five minutes to take command of the game. After a Shamir Johnson three-pointer to begin the run, Trey Staunch netted the lone bucket for Edinboro during the stretch with 6:47 on the clock. The Warriors then rattled off eight straight points on three-pointers from Jones and Rodriguez and a bucket in the paint by Weiss, as they opened a 31-17 advantage with 3:26 left in the half.
Edinboro responded with eight of the game's next 11 points, but ESU was able to finish out the half with the final two baskets from Weiss and Mike Millsip to take a 38-25 lead into the break.
ESU came out of the intermission firing, as the Warriors registered 21 points in the opening eight minutes of play. At the 15:02 mark, the Warriors began what would become a 12-2 run that pushed them in front by 20-plus points for the first time on the night.
After back-to-back buckets by Carlos Pepin and Weiss to start the rally, Rodriguez netted the final eight points of the run, including a pair of three-pointers, as the Warriors extended their lead to 59-35 with 12:04 showing on the clock.
ESU built its advantage to 30 points with 3:35 remaining, and eventually closed out the 85-51 victory to push its win streak to three straight.
The Warriors play their final game of 2019 tomorrow (Dec 21) at home against Mercyhurst. Opening tip from Koehler Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m.
