ESU Baseball Splits Saturday Twin Bill at Home with Saint Rose

Box Score (Game One) | Box Score (Game Two)

STROUDSBURG – A day after recording its first wins at Creekview Park, the East Stroudsburg University Baseball team split a twin bill at home against Saint Rose on Saturday. The Warriors dropped the opener 4-3 but scored early in game two en route to a 7-1 victory.

The Warriors (5-1) used a pair of home runs to rally in game one before seeing the Golden Knights score the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. ESU delivered a pair of key hits early in game two that would put something breathing room between the Warriors and Golden Knights. Saint Rose (1-3) stranded 12 runners on base in game one and left the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh inning.

Junior CJ Lopez and junior Anthony Torreullas tallied home runs for the Warriors on Saturday as Lopez knotted the score 3-3 in game one with his two-run blast over the fence in left field. Lopez finished the day 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, while sophomore Brock Kauffman went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Brainy Rojas added a pair of hits for ESU, while redshirt senior Christian Rishel worked three walks to go along with a double and two RBI.

Nicholas Teitter went 2-for-4 in the opening game with a pair of RBIs, while Andrew Pedone finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and two walks. Tyler Osborne scored a run in the first game without registering an official at-bat as he worked four walks against the ESU pitching staff. Eight other Golden Knights recorded at least one hit between the two games.

Junior Cam Voss made his first start for the Warriors in the opening game and would keep the Golden Knights off the scoreboard until the top of the third inning. With a pair of runners on base, Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead off a single through the left side. Voss would get out of the inning with a fly out to right and a strikeout.

Saint Rose added to its lead in the top of the fourth inning with a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI single off the bat of Teitter that made it 3-0. The Warriors would rally in the bottom of the frame as Torreullas got things started with a solo home run to left center. Lopez followed two batters later with a two-run blast to left that scored senior Zarley Cina to even the score 3-3.

Pitching and defense would take over the rest of the way in the opener as Saint Rose broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh inning with a bases-loaded walk. The Warriors would get the potential tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the frame but Saint Rose closed the door with a strikeout to preserve the 4-3 win.

Stephen Hill (1-0) tossed six innings for the Golden Knights before yielding way to the bullpen. Hill scattered three runs off six hits while recording two walks and two strikeouts. Joe Guerette closed the game for Saint Rose in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman Justin Guidos (1-1) suffered the loss for the Warriors after working 3.1 innings of relief and allowing one run off four hits and six strikeouts.

The Warriors would score first in game two as Rishel drove a pitch into center field to make it 2-0. ESU chased Saint Rose starter Jake Bernardo from the contest in the bottom of the second inning following a trio of walks to load the bases. Leading 4-0, Kauffman sent an 0-2 offering over the head of the center fielder allowing Rojas and freshman Jake Packer to score to make it 6-0.

Junior Carson Freeman made his first start of the season for the Warriors and kept the Golden Knights' offense quiet in the process. Freeman worked around a one-out single from Stephan MacMeans in the third inning and recorded one of his five strikeouts to end the frame. Saint Rose looked to rally against Freeman and the Warriors in the fifth inning following a pair of singles. ESU ended the threat by the Golden Knights with a 6-4-3 double play.

Saint Rose would plate a run in the top of the sixth inning against redshirt senior Matt Durkin. The Golden Knights took advantage of an ESU error followed by a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Patrick LaDouce scored from third off a single into center to trim the deficit to 7-1. Durkin would strand a pair of runners on base after getting back-to-back outs on 0-1 pitches.

The game would be called in the middle of the sixth inning due to darkness as Freeman (1-0) recorded his first win of the season for ESU. Freeman held the Golden Knights scoreless through five innings and yielded just three hits.

The Warriors host American International, Saint Rose, and Jefferson next weekend at Creekview Park with all three games scheduled to start at 2 p.m. ESU hits the road March 8-10 for four games in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Complex.
