MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Redshirt freshman
Marissa Govan recorded her first collegiate home run, and sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen added three RBIs, but it was not enough offense for East Stroudsburg University in a doubleheader sweep at Barry on Friday.
The Warriors fell 7-5 in their 2019 opener, and they dropped a 12-9 decision in the second contest. The Buccaneers, who topped an Angelo State team ranked sixth in Division II by a 4-2 final last Sunday, improved to 3-3 on the year.
ESU trailed 7-0 after four innings in Game 1, but rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth without the benefit of a hit. The visitors took advantage of four walks, two HBP and a fielding error to get back into the contest.
Senior
Madison Vicendese and Caleen picked up RBIs on a bases-loaded walk and HBP, respectively. The Warriors drew 10 walks overall in the opener, their most in a single game since they also had 10 at Goldey-Beacom on March 5, 2013.
ESU brought the tying run to the plate after a one-out single by Vicendese in the seventh, but Barry's Gabby Vallee struck out the next two Warriors to end the contest.
Caleen got ESU off to a quick start in Game 2 with a two-run single in the first, and Govan added to the lead with a solo homer to left with two outs in the second.
The Bucs responded with six-straight runs, including five in the bottom of the second, to take a 6-3 advantage.
An RBI double by Govan and a run-scoring triple by Vicendese highlighted a three-run fourth for the visitors to level up the score again. Vicendese's triple was her fourth in three seasons at ESU.
Barry moved in front for good with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, all of which scored with two outs. The final three Warrior runs came in the top of the sixth, with two coming on the first collegiate RBIs for freshmen
Denva Shaw-Tait and
Rachel Seiverd.
Govan finished the night cap 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Vicendese also had three hits, while Shaw-Tait scored three runs and sophomore
Sofia Cecchin added a pair of steals.
Cecchin had three stolen bases overall on the night, and junior
Kaylee Hazewski chipped in one steal in each contest.
ESU returns to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Lynn for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
