BOCA RATON, Fla. – Mia Veliz delivered a go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, as Lynn University rallied for a 9-6 win in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep over East Stroudsburg University on Saturday.
The Fighting Knights (6-2) won Game 1 over the Warriors (0-4) by a 5-0 final. They have now won five games in a row overall.
ESU had leads on three separate occasions in Game 2, but was unable to secure a first victory in its eight-game Miami road trip to begin the 2019 season. Senior
Madison Vicendese led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while sophomore
Sofia Cecchin added three hits and three steals across the two games.
Lynn's Kayla Sheffield recorded a two-hit shutout in the opener, striking out five batters while walking only one. The Fighting Knights plated single runs in each of the first three frames, and closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Game 2 was tied at two after three innings, with singles from Vicendese scoring junior
Kaylee Hazewski in both the first and third frames. The Warriors jumped ahead 4-2 in the fourth after an error by the left fielder plated both Hazewski and Cecchin.
Lynn responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, only for ESU to move back in front in the next half inning. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen leveled up the score on a run-scoring double down the left field line, and sophomore
Ashley Spencer made it 6-5 on a single to left two batters later.
The Fighting Knights scored two additional insurance runs after Veliz's go-ahead hit in the bottom of the fifth, and the Warriors were retired in order in each of the final two innings.
Hazewski added a pair of steals to go along with her three runs scored. She has four steals in ESU's first four games and 52 overall in her collegiate career, a total which ranks second all-time in program history. Cecchin, meanwhile, has been successful on each of her first six stolen base attempts in 2019 after going 11 for 11 in steals as a freshman last spring.
Vicendese has reached base in eight of her first 13 trips to the plate this season while hitting a team-high .545.
The Warriors remain in action Sunday afternoon, traveling to Nova Southeastern for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
