ETTRICK, Va. – Freshman
Mikayla Pourby allowed just one unearned run while picking up her first complete game, leading East Stroudsburg University to an 8-1 victory over Virginia State in Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader.
The Trojans (3-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn an 8-7 win in Game 2, as the two teams ultimately split their four-game weekend series.
Senior
Madison Vicendese reached base in six of her eight trips to the plate on the afternoon, while freshman
Rachel Seiverd added five hits for the Warriors offense. Junior
Kaylee Hazewski and redshirt freshman
Marissa Govan each supplied four hits at the top of the lineup, with Govan also totaling three RBIs and two stolen bases across the two contests.
All eight of ESU's runs in Game 1 came in the fourth through sixth innings. The Warriors scored five times in the top of the sixth to break open what had been a 3-1 game. A two-run double by Govan and another run-scoring double by sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen highlighted the offensive outburst.
That turned out to be more than enough support for Pourby, who fanned four batters while going the distance in the circle. Pourby gave up seven hits and allowed one unearned run in the bottom half of the fourth while evening up her season record at 2-2.
Vicendese and Seiverd each went 3 for 4 in Game 1, with Vicendese adding a stolen base and two runs scored for the visitors.
ESU had another three-hit performance in the nightcap, as sophomore
MacKenzie Lewis had a career-best outing at the plate. She finished the contest 3 for 3 with a walk, double, triple and an RBI from the No. 8 spot in the lineup.
The Warriors had 12 hits as a team in Game 2 while jumping out to a 7-4 advantage through four innings. Hazewski and Govan each had two hits and two steals, and Seiverd collected two more hits and an RBI.
Virginia State, though, scored once in the fifth to pull within two runs, and the first five batters came through with hits for the home side in the decisive bottom of the seventh. Kara Morris completed the comeback with a two-run walk-off single.
Vicendese has now reached base in seven of ESU's last eight games, and she has three multi-hit games during that stretch.
The Warriors (4-10) are scheduled to return to action Thursday afternoon with a 2 p.m. home doubleheader against Chestnut Hill at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg.
