Freeman’s Home Run Helps ESU Baseball Split Doubleheader against Lock Haven

Box Score (Game One) | Box Score (Game Two)

STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team opened PSAC East play with a split against Lock Haven on Saturday at Creekview Park. The Warriors tallied a 6-2 win in game two after dropping a 9-0 decision in the opener against the Bald Eagles.

ESU (12-6, 1-1) responded with a pair of three-run innings in the second game against Lock Haven after struggling to produce any offense in the opener against the Bald Eagles on Saturday. Lock Haven (7-8-1, 1-1) scored early and often in game one as the Bald Eagles held a 7-0 advantage through three innings of play.

Junior Carson Freeman finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate for the Warriors. He delivered his first home run of the season in game two to spark the ESU offense while adding a double. Sophomore Brock Kauffman extended his hitting streak to 16 games after going 3-for-6 with one run batted in for the Warriors. Sophomore Brainy Rojas and freshman Jake Packer both added a pair of hits on the day for ESU.

Isaac Porter and Reagan Lawlor each tallied a pair of RBI in a game one victory for the Bald Eagles. Joe Zgleszewski was responsible for plating both Lock Haven runs in game two with his single in the top of the fourth inning.

In game one, Lock Haven tallied three runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead against the Warriors. The Bald Eagles eventually increased their lead to 7-0 after adding three runs in the top of the third inning.

ESU looked to get things going offensively in the bottom of the first following back-to-back singles from Freeman and Kauffman. The Bald Eagles would get out of the inning after turning an inning-ending 4-6-3 double-play. Lock Haven turned another double-play in the bottom of the fourth inning after a leadoff single from junior Anthony Torreullas.

Lock Haven starter Jesse Slinger worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning as he went the distance for the Bald Eagles, securing a 9-0 victory to start the day. Connor Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss for ESU after working 2.1 innings.

The Warriors would strike first in game two as Packer and Rojas both reached base via singles in the bottom of the third inning. Freeman took a 1-2 offering from Lock Haven starter Scott Leitholf and sent it over the fence in right field to make it 3-0 ESU.

Lock Haven answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning against ESU starter Chase Nowak. Nowak, a redshirt freshman, allowed a one-out single with the bases-loaded but would escape further damage thanks to an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play.

ESU gave its bullpen some breathing room by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Redshirt junior Kyle Rogers highlighted the inning for the Warriors with a run-scoring single that allowed Kauffman to score and make it 5-2.

Nowak (4-1) scattered five hits through five innings of work for the Warriors and yielded just two runs while adding three strikeouts. Freshman Justin Guidos kept the Bald Eagles out of the hit column through the final two innings to preserve the 6-1 victory for ESU. Leitholf suffered the loss for Lock Haven after allowing six runs off eight hits through 5.1 innings of work.

ESU heads to Lock Haven on Sunday for a pair of PSAC East games beginning at 1 p.m. The Warriors then hit the road for a pair of mid-week non-conference matchups against Jefferson and Molloy.
