RICHMOND, Va. – Junior
Kaylee Hazewski set a new program record with the first of her four stolen bases on the afternoon, and East Stroudsburg University finished off a 4-0 weekend with a doubleheader sweep at Virginia Union on Sunday.
The Warriors (14-12) won both games over the Panthers (4-13) in five innings, taking Game 1 by an 8-0 final and Game 2 by a 13-1 margin.
Hazewski passed Jen Veronesi (2004-07) for first place all-time in career steals after swiping second base in the first inning of the opener. She has 80 stolen bases in 105 games as a Warrior, and her 32 steals this season are 15 more than any other PSAC player.
Senior
Madison Vicendese, redshirt freshman
Marissa Govan and Hazewski each totaled three hits across the two games, while sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen and freshman
Rachel Seiverd each had a home run and four RBIs. Vicendese, who entered with eight career stolen bases, was successful on all three of her attempts this afternoon.
Freshman
Mikayla Pourby tossed a four-hit shutout in Game 1, and sophomore
Mickayla Grow went the distance without allowing an earned run in Game 2.
The Warriors' 2019 home opener is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, with ESU set to host Bloomfield in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg (
UPDATE: the games are now scheduled to be played on-campus at Zimbar Field).
Game 1: ESU 8, Virginia Union 0 (five innings)
The Warriors broke the contest open with six runs in the top half of the third, and all six hits in the frame came with two outs. Singles by Vicendese and sophomore
Ashley Spencer and a double by Caleen plated the first three runs, and Seiverd delivered the decisive blow with a three-run shot to center field.
Hazewski, Vicendese and Pourby each had two hits in the win, while Govan added a stolen base and two runs scored. With her win in the circle, Pourby improved to 6-2 with a 1.87 earned-run average on the year.
Game 2: ESU 13, Virginia Union 1 (five innings)
The Warriors used a five-run third inning and an eight-run fifth to complete their second-straight doubleheader sweep. A two-run homer by Caleen, her second of the season and the fourth of her ESU career, led the way in the third, and a two-run double by Govan was among the highlights in the fifth.
Caleen had three RBIs in the win, while Govan and sophomore
MacKenzie Lewis had two each. Lewis had four hits and five RBIs in her two starts this weekend to raise her season average to .314.
Grow improved to 4-1 this season in the circle after striking out two and giving up just three hits in her five innings of work. Virginia Union's only run of the day came on an unearned tally in the bottom of the third.
