ESU Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Virginia State

Box Score (Game 1)  |  Box Score (Game 2)

ETTRICK, Va. – Freshman Mikayla Pourby and sophomore Mickayla Grow combined to allow five hits and just one run in the circle, helping East Stroudsburg University top Virginia State by a 4-1 final in Game 1 of Saturday's road doubleheader.

Freshman Denva Shaw-Tait, sophomore Sofia Cecchin and senior Madison Vicendese drove in runs for the Warriors (3-9) in the opener. The host Trojans (2-8) would score five runs in the final two innings to rally for a 5-4 win in Game 2.

Pourby allowed four hits and the lone run in her five innings of work, picking up her first collegiate victory in the process. Grow then struck out a pair of batters over two scoreless innings to earn her first save. The one run was the fewest allowed by ESU pitchers in a game this season.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, as Shaw-Tait crossed the plate on a Vicendese groundout after belting a one-out triple. An RBI single by Cecchin and a bases loaded walk to Shaw-Tait provided some insurance runs for ESU in the fifth.

Junior Kaylee Hazewski manufactured the final Warrior run in the seventh, as she singled, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch. Hazewski and sophomore Ashley Spencer each had a pair of hits for ESU in Game 1.

Hazewski added two more steals in the nightcap for the visitors, who held a 4-0 lead after plating single runs in each of the first four innings. The Trojans cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fifth, and a two-out RBI double by Vanessa Ruby closed out a three-run sixth which put Virginia State ahead.

Shaw-Tait was stranded at second base in ESU's final trip to the plate after leading off the frame with a double to center field. Brooklynn Bilyard retired the next three batters in order to secure the win.

The Warriors registered five steals in Game 2, with Shaw-Tait, Cecchin and sophomore Kaitlyn Caleen also swiping bases. Hazewski upped her PSAC-leading total to 13 steals on the year, while Cecchin follows with 11.

Cecchin, who also drove in a run for the Warriors in the second contest, upped her hitting streak to 10 games. She is hitting a team-high .382 so far this season.

ESU and Virginia State will play two more games on Sunday afternoon, with the opener scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
