STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University belted three home runs in Game 1, and freshman
Lexi Wright hit a go-ahead two-run shot to left field in the night cap to lift the Warriors to a doubleheader sweep over Shippensburg on Thursday.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen, freshman
Denva Shaw-Tait and freshman
Mikayla Pourby went deep in a 7-3 victory to begin the afternoon, while Wright's opposite field blast highlighted a four-run fourth inning during a 5-3 win in Game 2.
The Warriors (21-17, 4-4 PSAC) have now won five-straight games over the Raiders (19-17, 4-4 PSAC) dating back to last season, and they moved into a tie with Shippensburg for third place in the PSAC East standings.
Caleen set the tone early on, as she pulled a two-run homer to left field in the first inning of Game 1 to give ESU an early lead. Shaw-Tait added to that margin with a solo shot in the fourth, and Pourby doubled the lead on a three-run line drive homer in the fifth. Caleen and Pourby each hit their third long balls of the season, keeping them both tied for the team lead.
After Shippensburg reduced the margin back down to 6-3 in the top half of the sixth inning, senior
Madison Vicendese supplied a final insurance run on a double to right in the bottom of the frame. Vicendese and Shaw-Tait each had a pair of hits in Game 1, with Shaw-Tait adding her seventh stolen base of the year.
Pourby recorded her eighth complete game of the season in the circle, as she improved her win-loss record to 10-4 after striking out two and allowing only two earned runs. Pourby is the fifth freshman in program history to earn double-digit victories in her debut collegiate season (first since 2001).
The Warriors fell behind 2-0 through two and a half innings in Game 2, but sophomore
Ashley Spencer got the home side on the board with a run-scoring single to right in the bottom of the third.
Wright then delivered the key hit in the fourth, as she went opposite field while hitting her first collegiate homer to put ESU in front. Spencer would chip in a two-run double to right-center later in the inning which scored both sophomore
Sofia Cecchin and junior
Kaylee Hazewski.
Sophomore
Mickayla Grow worked around trouble in each of the final two innings to secure the win. Grow stranded a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh, inducing a pop up to the circle for the final out of the afternoon. She is now 6-2 with a 3.01 earned-run average on the year.
Hazewski finished with two hits and two runs scored from the top of the lineup. She also stole her 41st and 42nd bases of the year, moving her within two of matching Jen Veronesi for ESU's all-time single-season record. Hazewski entered the afternoon ranked second in all of Division II in stolen bases per game.
The Warriors look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, when they travel to Millersville for another PSAC East twin bill beginning at 1 p.m.
