STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team saw a pair of leads slip-away against Bloomsburg on Friday as the Huskies recorded a 4-2 win in game one and a 5-4 victory in game two at Hughes Field.
ESU (23-11, 9-5 PSAC East) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning of game one before Bloomsburg scored three unanswered runs, including two in the seventh. The Huskies (20-8, 9-5 PSAC East) saw a 4-2 lead go-away in the fifth inning of game two before hitting a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Junior
Anthony Torreullas finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate to go along with two runs scored and one run batted in for the Warriors. He delivered a triple and double, while redshirt senior
Christian Rishel went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman
Logan Stirr finished 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored.
Bloomsburg would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning of game one off a sacrifice fly to center field. ESU rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning as junior
CJ Lopez delivered a sacrifice fly of his own to even the score 1-1. Redshirt senior
Mike Sulcoski followed with a run-scoring single that scored Stirr to give ESU a 2-1 advantage.
A run-scoring single from the Huskies tied the score once again in the top of the sixth inning. Bloomsburg took a 3-2 advantage in the top of the seventh inning off a balk and doubled its lead to 4-2 off a single that plated a runner from third. ESU looked to rally in the last of the seventh but would be retired in order to end the game.
Junior
Connor Johnson was handed with a no-decision on the mound for ESU despite limiting the Huskies to just one run through five innings of work. Johnson fanned two batters and scattered four hits. Freshman
Justin Guidos (3-2) was handed with the loss for the Warriors after allowing three runs through 1.1 innings of work.
ESU would get the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning of game two as sophomore
Brock Kauffman recorded a sacrifice fly to score sophomore
Brainy Rojas. Torreullas would later score off a wild pitch to make it 2-0 ESU.
Bloomsburg countered with a four-run fourth inning and took a 4-2 advantage in the process. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Torreullas delivered a triple that would score Rojas and trim the deficit to 4-3. A sacrifice fly from Rishel would plate Torreullas and knot the score 4-4.
It seemed as though the game would remain tied heading into the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases empty and a pair of outs on the board for Bloomsburg. The Huskies had other plans in mind as a solo home run to right field proved to be the difference. ESU would bring the potential tying run to the plate following a one-out walk to Torreullas but a fly ball and groundout would secure the victory for Bloomsburg.
Junior
Cam Voss took the no-decision for ESU after yielding four runs off four hits through 3.1 innings of work. Voss notched six strikeouts in the contest, while redshirt freshman
Chase Nowak (5-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just the home run in his 3.2 innings of relief.
The Warriors head to Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon for a PSAC East matchup against the Huskies. The twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Danny Litwhiler Field.
