ESU Softball Holds off West Chester in Game 2, Earns PSAC East Doubleheader Split

Box Score (Game 1)  |  Box Score (Game 2)

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Freshman Denva Shaw-Tait doubled to right to begin a two-out rally in the seventh inning, and she scored on an error two batters later to help East Stroudsburg University secure a split at West Chester with a 5-4 victory in Game 2.

Sophomore Ashley Spencer added three hits, including her first home run of the season, for the Warriors (22-20, 5-7 PSAC) in the night cap after they dropped a 7-0 decision in Game 1. ESU earns its first road victory over the Golden Rams (27-16, 8-4 PSAC) since 2012 and ensured a split of the four games between the teams this season.

The Warriors plated single runs in each of the first three innings in Game 2. Spencer collected the first of her two RBIs in the first, as she scored junior Kaylee Hazewski on a single up the middle. Hazewski recorded her 44th stolen base in the frame, tying her with Jen Veronesi for the program's single-season all-time record. She leads the PSAC and ranks fourth in Division II with 1.08 steals per contest.

Sophomore Sofia Cecchin and freshman Rachel Seiverd drove in runs in the second and third innings, respectively, as the visitors held a 3-2 advantage heading into the fifth. Spencer then doubled that lead with a solo blast to left-center, as she tallied her fourth collegiate home run.

West Chester rallied to tie the score on solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Shaw-Tait ignited ESU's seventh-inning rally. Sophomore Mickayla Grow stranded runners on first and second to secure the victory in the bottom half of the frame. She improved to 7-2 on the year after working the final five innings in the circle.

Golden Rams starter Reilly Gearhart kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in Game 1, as she worked around five hits and two walks to record a complete-game shutout. A two-run single by Emily Maseth highlighted a four-run fourth inning for West Chester which put the game out of reach.

West Chester entered the afternoon ranked No. 1 in the initial Division II Atlantic Region rankings which were released on Wednesday. ESU also owns a pair of victories this season over a Shippensburg squad currently ranked seventh in the region. Eight teams from the region will qualify for this year's national tournament: conference champions from the PSAC, Mountain East and CIAA and five at-large selections.

The Warriors are scheduled to return to action next Tuesday, when they travel to USciences for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
