Hazewski Sets Single-Season Steals Record, ESU Softball Splits at USciences

Box Score (Game 1)  |  Box Score (Game 2)

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Kaylee Hazewski set a new single-season program record with the first of her seven stolen bases on the afternoon, as East Stroudsburg University split a non-conference doubleheader at USciences on Tuesday.

Hazewski had a career-high five stolen bases in Game 1, which the Warriors (23-21) won by an 8-0 final in five innings. The host Devils (7-31) used a five-run rally in the sixth inning to take the night cap 6-3 and salvage a split.

With today's effort, Hazewski moves past future ESU Hall of Famer Jen Veronesi for the all-time single season mark. She has been successful on 51 of 58 attempts this spring while consistently ranking among the Division II leaders. Hazewski has a program-record 99 steals overall in her first three collegiate seasons.

The top of the lineup carried the Warriors in Game 1, with each of the one through four hitters collecting two hits in the victory. Hazewski had two hits, two walks and three runs scored while reaching base in all four trips to the plate, senior Madison Vicendese recorded two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while sophomores Kaitlyn Caleen and Ashley Spencer each totaled two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

That was more than enough support for freshman Mikayla Pourby in the circle. Pourby struck out five batters in a four-hit shutout, improving her season record to 11-6 in the process. Her 11 wins are tied for the second most by an ESU freshman in team history.

ESU started Game 2 strong as well, as Hazewski stole two more bases during a two-run top of the first and the visitors maintained a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. USciences, though, plated its first run in the third inning, and a two-run double by Miranda Rodriguez highlighted the home side's go-ahead rally in the sixth.

Vicendese had two more hits to go along with a pair of steals in the night cap. Freshman Lexi Wright also swiped a pair of bases, while freshman Denva Shaw-Tait went 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs at the plate. ESU was unstoppable on the base paths throughout the afternoon, with the Warriors successful on all 16 of their stolen base attempts.

ESU returns to PSAC East play for two doubleheaders to conclude the regular season this weekend. First up is a key 2:30 p.m. twin bill at Shippensburg on Friday.
