STROUDSBURG – Sophomore
Sofia Cecchin delivered a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth inning, and
Angelica Dark struck out a season-high seven batters on her Senior Day to help East Stroudsburg University secure a doubleheader split against Kutztown with a 5-4 victory in Game 2.
The Warriors (24-22, 6-8 PSAC) dropped a 13-7 decision to the Golden Bears (33-18, 9-7 PSAC) in the opener, a result that ultimately eliminated them from PSAC tournament contention after Shippensburg swept a twin bill at Millersville.
Dark and
Madison Vicendese were each honored for their contributions to the program between games, and both had strong efforts in their final home contests at Vigon International Field. Dark went the distance for the fifth time this spring, and her seven K's were her most in a game since she also had seven during a win at Virginia State on March 3 last season. Vicendese, meanwhile, had her third three-hit game of the season in the opener, as she finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Kutztown totaled 19 hits in Game 1, scoring in each of its final six trips to the plate. Tamara Jennings and Jenna Lipowski each collected three hits and two RBIs from the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the lineup.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen had the top offensive highlight for the Warriors to start the day, as she blasted her team-leading fourth home run of the season to left-center in the bottom half of the third. Caleen added another RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth.
Cecchin drove in three of ESU's five runs in the night cap, finishing the contest 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman
Lexi Wright added two hits and two stolen bases, while freshman
Denva Shaw-Tait and sophomore
MacKenzie Lewis also had steals.
Cecchin's go-ahead triple broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth, as she laced a line drive to the gap in right center on a 2-2 count. Junior
Kaylee Hazewski added an insurance marker on a single through the right side.
That turned out to be an important extra tally, with the Golden Bears rallying for two runs in the top of the seventh. Dark induced a flyout from Lipowski to strand the tying run at second and give ESU its first win over Kutztown this season.
The Warriors wrap up the 2019 campaign on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Shippensburg for a PSAC East doubleheader getting underway at 1 p.m.
