STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Rachel Seiverd blasted her second home run of the season, and freshman
Mikayla Pourby delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 9-4 win over West Chester in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Vigon International Field.
The Warriors (19-17, 2-4 PSAC) topped the Golden Rams for the first time since March 30, 2013. West Chester (23-14, 4-2 PSAC) would salvage a split with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Pourby's single highlighted a five-run rally, all with two outs, for ESU in the bottom half of the fifth. Senior
Madison Vicendese tied the score at 4-4 after sending a 2-2 pitch back up the middle to score sophomore
Sofia Cecchin.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Caleen then drew a walk to load the bases for Pourby, who put the home side in front with her base knock to left. Freshman
Denva Shaw-Tait provided some key insurance runs for the Warriors with a two-run single to right-center two batters later.
Seiverd's long ball capped a three-run second inning for ESU, with Pourby adding an RBI double off the wall in center. Seiverd and Pourby combined for four hits and five RBIs to lead the Warrior offense in the opener.
Caleen plated the final run for ESU on a bases loaded walk in the sixth. She also added her second triple of the season to start the Warriors rally in the second.
Pourby went the distance in the circle as well, giving up seven hits and striking out four to improve her season record to 9-4. She has recorded complete games in seven of her 16 starts this spring.
Heidi McCollester had the decisive hit for West Chester in Game 2, as she lashed a two-run double down the left field line in the third to five the visitors a 3-0 advantage. Vicendese pulled one back for ESU on a long double to right in the bottom half of the frame, but the Warriors were held off the scoreboard in each of their final four trips to the plate.
ESU's best chance to rally came in the sixth, as singles from Shaw-Tait, freshman
Lexi Wright and Cecchin loaded the bases with one out. Jen Henshaw, though, came on in relief to retire the final two batters, and she would work around a leadoff single in the seventh to secure her second save of 2019.
Maegen Kavanaugh pitched the first 5 1/3 innings for West Chester, working around eight hits and three walks to pick up the victory.
Vicendese and junior
Kaylee Hazewski each had a pair of hits in the nightcap for ESU. Hazewski also added her PSAC-leading 40th stolen base of the season in the fifth.
The Warriors remain at Creekview Park for their next doubleheader, as they host Jefferson in a twin bill beginning at 2:30 p.m.
