2019 PSAC Baseball Championship Central
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team dropped a pair of games against Shippensburg on Saturday as the Warriors closed the regular season ahead of the 2019 PSAC Baseball Championship that is set for next week. The Raiders rallied in both games, winning 9-8 and 8-7.
ESU (31-17, 17-11 PSAC East) secured the No. 4 seed in the East and will face the No. 1 seed from the West, Gannon on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The 2019 PSAC Baseball Championship will take place in Johnstown, Pa. and is hosted by Pitt-Johnstown. A full championship bracket will be released by the conference on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman
Logan Stirr continued his strong series at the plate against the Raiders, going 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of doubles and one run batted in. Stirr has 13 doubles on the season which is tied for second all-time by a freshman in program history. Junior
Anthony Torreullas hit two more home runs on Saturday and tied senior
Zarley Cina for the team-lead in the process. Torreullas finished with three hits to go along with four RBI and three runs scored.
ESU opened game one with three runs in the top of the first inning as Cina followed a solo home run from Torreullas with a two-run double to right field to make it 3-0. Shippensburg would hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Senior
Christian Rishel started the fifth inning with a solo home run for the Warriors. The home run was the 18th of his career and tied him for third-place all-time in program history with current assistant coach
Ian Allen. Leading 6-1, junior
CJ Lopez delivered a run-scoring triple to increase the advantage to 7-1. ESU closed the scoring in the inning with a double steal as Lopez would steal home to make it 8-1.
The Warriors would be unable to hold the lead as Shippensburg rallied in the bottom of the frame with seven runs to knot the score 8-8. The score would hold through the regulation seven innings as both sides would play into the eighth. ESU would strand runners on second and third in the top of the inning before the Raiders walked-off with a double to secure the 9-8 win.
It would be early offense once again for ESU in game two as Torreullas connected on a three-run home run to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore
Brainy Rojas joined Torreullas with a home run of his own in the fourth inning to make it 7-1.
Shippensburg would start its comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and cut the deficit to 7-3. The Raiders scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning to knot the score 7-7 before taking an 8-7 advantage. The Raiders scored three of their runs in the frame off wild pitches.
The game would be called following the completion of the fifth inning due to rain. The two teams were able to avoid the rainy weather until the third inning of the second contest. Freshman
Mike Yates made his first career start for the Warriors and took the no-decision after allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits through four innings of work.
