Joey Paolini hit a home run for the East Stroudsburg University baseball team at the 2019 PSAC Baseball Championship at Point Stadium in Johnstown. The Warriors would be eliminated from the tournament following a 6-3 loss against California (Pa.)
ESU (31-19) finishes the season with its most wins since setting a program record with 38 wins following the 2016 season. Cal U (36-14) advances to play the loser of Bloomsburg/Millersville tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Senior
Zarley Cina finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate for the Warriors, while junior
CJ Lopez went 1-for-2 with a double and one run scored. Junior
Anthony Torreullas, sophomore
Brainy Rojas, and freshman
Logan Stirr each finished with a hit for ESU. Paolini finished 1-for-2 with a three-run home run. He finished his two games 3-for-6 with three home runs and six runs batted in.
The Vulcans opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against ESU junior starter
Connor Johnson. Cal U extended its advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the fifth inning, the Warriors would look to rally against Cal U starter Brayden Kail. Stirr started the frame with a single to left field and would move to third base following a double from Lopez. Paolini trimmed the deficit for ESU to 4-3 with one swing of the bat as he cleared the netting above the left field wall.
Both teams would turn to the bullpen midway through the contest as junior
Cam Voss took over on the mound for the Warriors. The only blemish for Voss would be a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Vulcans increased their lead to 6-3.
ESU would be unable to rally against Cal U closer Hunter Robinson in the eighth and ninth inning as Robinson recorded three strikeouts in the top of the ninth inning. Johnson (4-3) suffered the loss for the Warriors after allowing four runs (two earned) off five hits through four innings of work. Voss fanned eight batters through four innings of work and tied for the fourth most strikeouts (80) in a single season in program history.
