Jada Martin had an offensive-breakout on Wednesday for the East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey team as the junior registered three goals and one assist in the Warriors' 6-1 victory against Molloy at Cedar Creek Park.
No. 3 ESU (3-0) saw its shutout streak come to an end in the fourth quarter as Molloy beat redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Christina Zydzik with less than five minutes to play in the contest. The Warriors did hold a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal against the Lions.
Sophomore
Celeste Veenstra opened the scoring for ESU 1:07 into the first quarter as she beat Molloy goalkeeper Ava Quick to make it 1-0. Martin tallied her first goal of the contest at the 2:21 mark as she took a shot in traffic to beat Quick and increase ESU's lead to 2-0.
Martin netted her second goal of the day at the 6:08 mark as she scored off a rebound from a shot initially taken by senior
Karly Conway. The goal by Martin would be the last of the opening half as both sides played a scoreless second quarter. Quick recorded four saves in the first half for the Lions, while Richie did not see a shot come her way.
The Warriors scored once in the third quarter to increase their advantage to 4-0 as sophomore
Morgan Mesenbrink beat new Molloy goalkeeper Ally Saigh off an assist from Martin. Saigh would settle in for the Lions as she made four saves to finish the quarter and keep the ESU offense at bay.
ESU pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fourth quarter as Martin took a shot from 10-yards out to beat Saigh. Molloy got onto the scoreboard at the 55:42 mark of the contest as Jessica Kleber scored off an assist from Zoe Norton. The goal ended Richie's and ESU's scoreless streak to start the 2019 season.
Junior
Melanie Nicodemo closed the scoring in the contest as her goal at the 59:44 mark made it 6-1 in favor of the Warriors. Nicodemo's first goal of the season was assisted by junior
Helen Bradley.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie (3-0) earned the win in net for the Warriors despite not facing a shot in her 50:26 of playing time before giving way to Zydzik. Quick and Saigh both allowed three goals each for Molloy as Quick finished with five saves, while Saigh finished with four.
The Warriors return home on Saturday as they face Slippery Rock at Whitenight Field beginning at 12 p.m. ESU then travels to Mount Olive to face the Trojans on September 15 at 1 p.m.
