Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – The third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey team scored a pair of goals in the second quarter en route to recording its third shutout of the season on Saturday at Whitenight Field against Slippery Rock, 3-0.

ESU (4-0) opened the scoring at the 18:15 mark of the second quarter as senior Karly Conway found the back of the net off a penalty corner. The Warriors held a 23-4 advantage in shots and a 13-2 edge in shots on goal.

The Warriors tallied four shots in the first period but Slippery Rock goalkeeper Maddie Murphy denied the lone opportunity on net for ESU. Conway and sophomore Celeste Veenstra tallied markers in the second period for ESU as Veenstra beat Murphy on a penalty stroke that was awarded at the 29:02 mark.

In the third quarter, Veenstra added her second goal of the contest and fourth of the season to give ESU a 3-0 lead. Veenstra beat Murphy after taking a feed from Conway at the 32:45 mark. The helper was Conway's team-leading third of the season as she moved into a tie for second on the team with seven points.

ESU looked to add to its advantage in the fourth quarter as it fired six shots on net. Murphy denied all six opportunities that she faced, while her counter-part Maddie Richie stopped both shots that she faced with just under 10 minutes to play in the quarter.

Veenstra guided the Warriors with eight shots on goal and two scores, while Conway registered a pair of shots on goal. Senior Kristen English, junior Jordyn Wigglesworth, and sophomore Hannah Barbush each added one shot on goal for ESU.

Richie recorded her third shutout of the season for the Warriors and has yet to allow a goal in almost 242 minutes of action for ESU. Earlier in the week, Richie was named the PSAC and NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week after her performance in net against Bellarmine and No. 8 Stonehill.

The Warriors head to Mount Olive, N.C. on Sunday for a 1 p.m. non-conference match against the Mount Olive Trojans.
