MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Freshman
Emily Mehnert recorded her first-career hat-trick as the third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey team defeated Mount Olive 7-0 on Sunday at the McDonald Sports Complex.
ESU (5-0) recorded its fourth shutout of the season as the Warriors tallied all seven of their goals against the Trojans in the first half of action. The Warriors held a 34-2 advantage in shots and a 13-1 margin in shots on goal. ESU also had 11 penalty corners in the contest, including 10 in the first half.
Senior
Grace Martini scored her first goal of the season to open the scoring in the contest at the 4:41 mark of the first period as she beat Trojans goalkeeper Victoria Lane. The contest would remain 1-0 until the 10:33 mark as sophomore
Celeste Veenstra added her team-leading fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Veenstra would add another goal for the Warriors with less than three minutes left in the first quarter as she beat Lane from the near corner to make it 3-0.
ESU increased its lead to 4-0 early in the second quarter as Mehnert tallied her first goal as a Warrior off an assist from freshman
Nicole Krozser. The assist was also the first point for Krozser as a Warrior.
Mehnert made it 5-0 just over a minute after tallying her first goal as she redirected a shot from junior
Lexi Hartmann. Sophomore
Morgan Mesenbrink would score her second goal of the season for ESU at the 22:57 mark of the second quarter to put the Warriors up 6-0 in the contest.
The Warriors closed the scoring in the contest at the 24:23 mark of the first half as Mehnert completed her hat-trick with just over five and a half minutes left to play. ESU tallied 33 of its shots in the half.
The second half would have a completely different feel to it as the Warriors slowed their offensive push against the Trojans. ESU took just one shot in the second half as it would come from freshman
Lia Parker in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner.
Mount Olive tallied both of its shots against ESU in the second half as Eline Udo found herself with an opportunity off a penalty corner for the Trojans. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Christina Zydzik stopped the shot by Udo with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Trojans also had an opportunity in the fourth quarter as Delaney Norr had her shot go wide of the net.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie (5-0) earned the win for ESU after starting the contest and playing the first half in net. Lane (1-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans after making four saves in goal. Mount Olive also had a pair of defensive saves in the contest.
The Trojans, playing in just their third game since announcing the addition on the program last September, recorded their first win in their first-ever home match on Saturday against Converse, 3-1. Mount Olive played its inaugural game on Sept. 11 as the Trojans dropped a 4-0 decision at Coker.
ESU hits the road for a pair of matches against Bloomsburg and Mansfield next week before returning home to host Kutztown on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
