BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey used three second-half goals to win its sixth-straight contest to open the 2019 season on Wednesday against Bloomsburg, 3-0.
ESU (6-0) continued its strong defensive play against the Huskies, limiting Bloomsburg to just one shot in the contest. The Warriors held a 19-1 advantage in shots and recorded 12 on frame against the Huskies.
Bloomsburg was able to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard in the opening half as Huskies goalkeeper Abby Shaffer made a pair of stops in the first quarter and three stops in the second quarter.
Sophomore
Celeste Veenstra put ESU on the scoreboard in the third quarter as her shot from the back of the circle beat Shaffer to make it 1-0. Veenstra's seventh goal of the season was assisted by junior
Jada Martin.
Veenstra later added her second goal of the contest in the quarter as she redirected a pass from junior
Lea Hughes to make it 2-0. The Warriors would take their two-goal advantage into the fourth quarter against the Huskies.
Senior
Karly Conway gave ESU a 3-0 advantage late in the fourth quarter as she took a feed from sophomore
Becca Heffner to beat Shaffer.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie earned her sixth win of the season in net for ESU, Shaffer suffered the loss despite making nine saves in net for the Huskies.
ESU travels to Mansfield on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest with the Mountaineers before returning home to host Kutztown on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
