SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A night removed from playing five sets and recording its first conference victory of the season, the East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team recorded a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-7) sweep against Slippery Rock.
ESU (11-3, 2-0 PSAC Central) won its sixth consecutive match and tallied its second straight win against The Rock dating back to last season.
The Warriors were paced by 13 kills from senior
Sarah Smith, who also recorded a double-double with 11 digs to go along with two service aces. Senior
Sam Dunphy added seven kills and six total blocks for ESU, while redshirt junior
Trea-sure Ketter tallied five kills and seven total blocks. Freshman setter
Rachel Cain tallied a match-high 29 assists to go along with 11 digs.
ESU recorded double-digit kills in all-three sets and hit .458 as a team in the third set (12 kills, 1 attack error). Slippery Rock committed 24 attack errors as a team in the match, while ESU committed just 12.
The Opening set featured four lead changes and four tie scores as ESU opened a 16-9 advantage following a double block by Smith and Ketter. The Rock eventually trimmed the deficit to 23-17 after a double block by Kaley Fucci and Abigail Nigon. ESU captured the opening set thanks to back-to-back blocks as Dunphy recorded a solo block, while Ketter and sophomore
Caylinn Davis secured the 25-17 victory.
With the second set tied 2-2, ESU used a 10-0 run to gain complete momentum against The Rock. ESU increased its lead to 23-14 in the set following a kill from freshman
Mya Young and attack error by Slippery Rock.
The Rock rallied to trim the deficit to 24-18 after a kill from Nigon and a double block by Sophie Varndell and Nigon. Smith ended the set with a kill to secure the 25-18 victory and put ESU up 2-0 in the match.
ESU would lead from start to finish in the third set as the Warriors opened with a 3-0 run. Slippery Rock cut the deficit to 7-5 after tallying back-to-back points only to see ESU rattle off five unanswered points to take a 12-5 advantage.
Leading 15-7 in the set, ESU would get the serve back following a service error by Slippery Rock. The Warriors closed the set on a 10-0 run to secure the 25-7 victory and the sweep of The Rock.
ESU returns home on Oct. 3 to open a three-game homestand inside Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors host Edinboro on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and Gannon on Friday at 7 p.m. ESU closes the weekend with a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Mercyhurst.
