ESU Women’s Soccer Opens 2019 Season with 6-0 Shutout of Chestnut Hill

Box Score

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – A five-goal second-half guided the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team to a season-opening 6-0 victory on Saturday against Chestnut Hill in a non-conference matchup.

The Warriors (1-0) took control of the contest early as senior Jessica Woodbyrne got ESU onto the scoreboard at the 9:28 mark with her first goal of the season. The Warriors would keep Chestnut Hill goalkeeper Amanda Ianniciello busy in the opening half as she made three saves in net.

ESU held a 17-2 advantage in shots in the first half, including an 8-1 margin in corner kicks. The Warriors would take their 1-0 edge into the half. ESU's defense held the Griffins to two shots in the half as both would be off frame.

A pair of seniors would work together to give ESU a 2-0 lead at the 47:24 mark of the second half as senior Monica Wood finished off a feed from senior Jules Sicker to beat Ianniciello. In the 63rd minute, it would be another senior that found the back of the net for the Warriors as Amy Strauser took a centering pass from freshman Alessia Bianchini to make it 3-0.

Junior Haley Skove and freshman Melissa Herrera each tallied goals in the 72nd and 80th minute to increase the ESU advantage to 5-0. Skove's tally came off a deflection in the box off a feed from freshman Brienn Seaman, while Herrera's was unassisted.

Bianchini would wrap up the scoring for ESU in the 88th minute of action as her free-kick just outside of the goal box beat the goalkeeper to make it 6-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Mauri Jackson recorded one save in the second half for the Warriors.

The Warriors finished the contest with a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 35-4 edge in shots (15-1 on goal). Several Warriors recorded at-least two shots on goal in the contest, while Bianchini finished with a goal and one assist.

ESU is back in action on September 11 as the Warriors travel to fifth-ranked Bloomsburg for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Huskies. The Warriors will also head to Kutztown on September 14 before hosting West Chester for their home opener on September 17 at 3 p.m.
