No. 3 ESU Women’s Field Hockey Blanks Bellarmine in 2019 Season Opener

Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – A goal from senior Karly Conway in the first quarter of action would be all that the third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey needed to defeat Bellarmine University, 4-0, on Saturday at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors (1-0) held a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first half before finding their offensive stride by tallying three goals against the Knights in the second half.

Conway would give ESU a 1-0 lead at the 14:04 mark of the first quarter after she found a loose ball in the crease and took a shot that beat the goalkeeper to the right. That would be the only shot to find the back of the net in the first half as Bellarmine goalkeeper Heather Gregory made six saves in the half.

ESU tallied 11 shots in the second quarter and 14 total in the opening half. The Warrior defense held the Knights without a shot in the first half as most of the pressure would be contained in the Bellarmine defensive end.

The Warriors found the back of the net twice in the third quarter as sophomore Celeste Veenstra doubled ESU's advantage at the 35:14 mark off an assist from Conway. Sophomore Becca Heffner made it 3-0 at the 42:59 mark as she redirected a shot from senior Kristen English past Gregory.

Sophomore Hannah Barbush added her first goal of the season for the Warriors in the fourth quarter as her shot beat Bellarmine goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter to the left side to make it 4-0.

Veenstra finished the contest with three shots on goal for ESU, while Barbush found the net twice for the Warriors. ESU held a 22-1 shot advantage in the contest, including a 14-1 margin on net. Freshman Maddie Kline also added a pair of shots on goal for the Warriors.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Richie (1-0) made one save on the only shot that she faced in the contest, while Gregory (0-1) allowed three goals to go along with six saves for the Knights. McWhorter allowed one goal and tallied one save in the fourth quarter for Bellarmine.

ESU hosts eighth-ranked Stonehill on Sunday at Whitenight Field beginning at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks opened their 2019 season on Friday with a 3-1 loss at second-ranked West Chester. The Warriors travel to Molloy on Wednesday, September 11 for a 4 p.m. matchup against the Lions.
