ESU Men’s Basketball Cruises to 91-54 Victory over Mansfield

EAST STROUDSBURG – Troy Jones netted a career-high 19 points to help power East Stroudsburg University to a 91-54 victory over visiting Mansfield on Saturday in PSAC men's basketball action Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Jones went 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point territory to lead all scorers in the contest. The redshirt junior has the two-highest scoring games of his career in the last three tilts, as he registered 17 points against Shippensburg a week ago.

Carlos Pepin chipped in a big game for the Warriors, registering 16 points and six rebounds, while Marc Rodriguez notched 12 points and four steals. Kitt Najee Walls posted a season-high eight assists in the contest.

ESU's bench contributed 52 combined points in the tilt, and the unit is now averaging 44.4 points per game over the last five contests. An ESU bench player has led the team in scoring in each of the five games during the stretch.

ESU (9-7, 5-6 PSAC) posted a 46.7-percent shooting night and hit 8-of-27 (.296) from deep, while Mansfield (4-12, 3-8 PSAC) shot 42.9-percent from the field, including just a 2-of-13 (.154) mark from long range.

The Warriors forced 26 turnovers by Mansfield and tallied 37 points off turnovers in the win. It marked the team's eighth game this season with 20 or more turnovers caused.

Things were tight between the Warriors and Mountaineers through the early stages, as the game stayed within two possessions in the opening nine-plus minutes of play.

With the Warriors leading 17-12 heading near the midway mark of the first half, ESU began what would become a big 16-6 run that spanned nearly six and a half minutes. Jones posted five points during the rally while Walls and Pepin added four apiece. The run for the Warriors extended their lead to 33-18 with 4:31 left in the half.

With 1:33 on the clock, Pepin intercepted a pass by Jahmir Green, took it to the bucket and slammed it down to give ESU its largest lead of the half, 44-24. The Mounties countered with the final four points of the half to cut the deficit to 44-28 heading into the break.

ESU's lead didn't dip under 14 points in the entirety of the second half, and the Warriors were able to truly break the game wide open as the contest headed into the final 12 minutes. ESU held a 21-point advantage with 12:02 remaining before rattling off a 22-6 run over the ensuing seven minutes that would push the advantage to 85-48 and put the game away.

The Warriors closed out the eventual 91-54 victory to get back in the win column and move into a tie for fourth place in the PSAC East.
