Warriors Roll to 64-43 Victory at Home against Mansfield; Schoffstall Tallies Career-Best 17

EAST STROUDSBURG – For a second straight contest, junior Abby Schoffstall played a key role for the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team as she finished with a career-high 17 points to guide the Warriors past Mansfield on Saturday, 64-43, in a PSAC East matchup.
 
ESU (12-5, 8-3 PSAC) matched its win total from the 2018-19 season with its triumph against the Mountaineers. The Warriors held Mansfield to 13 made field goals in the contest, the fourth-fewest in a single-game in program history.
 
Schoffstall finished the contest 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from downtown to go along with four assists for ESU. Senior Tiffany Lapotsky tallied 14 points and drained a pair of 3-pointers while adding six rebounds and three assists. Junior Kaitlyn Swint added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks.
 
It would be the Mountaineers that held the lead for the opening 42 seconds of the contest after hitting a layup with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter. ESU countered with a 7-0 run to gain momentum as redshirt sophomore Julia Kutz finished a layup in the paint to knot the score 2-2. Lapotsky followed with five consecutive points to stretch the advantage to five with 7:41 left on the clock.
 
An 11-0 run halfway through the quarter increased ESU's lead to 18-4 as Lapotsky and Schoffstall connected on back-to-back treys before Schoffstall and Swint closed the rally with a pair of layups. Mansfield closed the quarter by going 1-of-2 at the free-throw line to make it 18-5.
 
Schoffstall opened the second quarter with four straight points for the Warriors as she made it 22-5 following a jumper with 8:37 left on the clock. ESU would take its largest lead of the half as redshirt junior Sadie Cresswell drained a trey to make it 33-10 with 3:27 left in the quarter. Mansfield trimmed the deficit to 17 before Schoffstall connected on a 3-ball with six seconds left in the half to make it 38-18.
 
Mansfield played its best basketball of the afternoon early in the third quarter as the Mountaineers trimmed the deficit to 13 following a 7-0 run to open the second half. Chelsea Cover went 3-of-3 at the charity stripe to make it 38-25 after being fouled from outside the arc.
 
The Warriors countered with a 9-0 run to push the advantage back to 47-25 with less than four minutes to play in the quarter. Junior Kiersten Librizzi highlighted the run as she tallied four points for the Warriors. Mansfield closed the quarter at the charity stripe, going 4-for-4 to trim the gap to 50-36 heading to the fourth quarter.
 
ESU would outscore Mansfield 14-7 in the final quarter of action and eventually take a 26-point cushion with 6:45 left on the clock before a small rally from the Mountaineers. Neither team would score in the final 4:48 of the contest as Swint finished a layup to make it 64-38 before Mansfield connected on back-to-back layups with 3:53 left.
 
The Warriors shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and drained a season-high eight 3-pointers, while Mansfield shot just 32.5 percent (13-of-40) from the field. ESU forced Mansfield into 22 turnovers and tallied 31 points in the contest while adding 14 second-chance points. ESU hits the road for a pair of matches against West Chester and Gannon before returning to Koehler Fieldhouse on January 29 to face Lock Haven at 6 p.m.
