Early Offensive Barrage Guides Warriors Past Millersville, 78-59

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Junior Kaitlyn Swint dropped a career-high 22 points, including 16 in the first half as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team rolled to a 78-59 victory on Monday night in PSAC East action.
 
ESU (9-4, 5-2 PSAC) outscored Millersville 47-23 in the opening half of the contest and went 17-of-33, while the Marauders went just 10-of-29 from the field. The Warriors made the most of their opportunities at the free-throw line on the night going 23-of-29, including a 9-for-10 effort in the fourth quarter.
 
Swint finished 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe while adding five rebounds. Redshirt junior Sadie Cresswell tallied 13 points for ESU, while senior Tiffany Lapotsky finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior Jordan Hertz added seven assists to go along with eight points and seven boards for the Warriors.
 
The Warriors would take an early 5-4 advantage in the opening quarter as Lapotsky connected on a 3-pointer off an assist from redshirt sophomore Julia Kutz. Swint would follow with a pair of layups halfway through the quarter to give ESU an 11-8 edge over the Marauders.
 
Leading 11-10, ESU used a 9-0 run to increase its lead to 20-10 as Cresswell capped the rally with a trey off a feed from Lapotsky. Millersville would trim the deficit to 22-14 with less than a minute to play before ESU used a 4-0 rally to close the quarter and take a 26-14 lead heading to the second quarter.
 
Swint extended the Warriors' lead to 30-16 with 7:31 left in the second quarter as she finished a layup in the paint off an assist from Kutz. The Marauders looked to put a rally together as they cut the gap to 30-21 with just over five minutes left to play in the half. The Warriors answered with a convincing run as the advantage stretched to 41-21 over the next three minutes.
 
ESU closed the half on a 6-0 run as Lapotsky accounted for five of the points. She connected on a pair of free throws followed by a 3-pointer with 45 ticks left on the clock. Kutz went 1-of-2 at the line to close the scoring and send the Warriors into the half with a 47-23 lead.
 
In the third quarter, it would be Swint and Hertz that helped to increase the Warriors' lead to 56-27 as Swint finished a fast break layup, while Hertz drained a trey with just over seven minutes left to play. The Warriors held their largest lead of the contest with 3:18 left to play in the quarter as a pair of free throws from Cresswell made it 61-31.
 
A 28-point lead to start the fourth quarter would prove to be enough in the end for the Warriors as Millersville rallied to trim the deficit to 19 on several occasions. Despite going just 2-of-7 from the field in the quarter, ESU hit nine of its chances at the charity stripe.
 
The Warriors tallied 13 points off Millersville turnovers in the contest and notched 11 second-chance points while finishing 25-of-54 from the field. ESU returns to Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday and Saturday for a pair of PSAC East matchups against Bloomsburg and Shippensburg.
