ESU Men’s Basketball Falls at Home to Bloomsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team wasn't able to overcome a combined 47 points from Bloomsburg's Justin Anderson and Ky Mauras, as the Warriors fell to Huskies by an 87-75 margin on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU's win streak of five straight was snapped at Millersville on Monday, and the Warriors dropped their second straight contest on Wednesday to fall to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in PSAC action. Bloomsburg improved to 7-7 on the year and 4-4 in the conference to move into a tie with ESU in the PSAC East standings.

Justin Paz scored a team-high 14 points to pace the Warriors, which marked the second-highest scoring performance of his young career. Paz drained a game-high four three-pointers on six attempts from beyond the arc, and went 5-of-10 overall from the field. Kitt Najee Walls (12 points) and Carlos Pepin (11) also finished in double-figures, while Michal Weiss notched nine points and nine rebounds.

For Bloomsburg, Anderson hit 8-of-14 from the floor and led all scorers with 26 points in the tilt. Mauras contributed 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

The Huskies shot 55.6-percent from the field overall, compared to a 39.2-percent mark by the Warriors. BU also held a slight advantage on the glass, 42-39.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 16-7 advantage at the 12:48 mark, and grabbed the first double-digit lead of the contest, 22-12, just over four minutes later after a layup from Travis Elmore.

The Warriors battled back and chipped their deficit down to four with 7:32 on the clock, but BU countered with seven straight points, including the final four from Anderson, to build the biggest advantage of the opening half, 29-18.

ESU continued to be resilient, whittling the BU lead down to as little as one in the final minutes of the half, and the Huskies eventually took a 41-39 advantage into the intermission.

After BU opened a five-point advantage in the early going of the second half, ESU rattled off seven consecutive points on a layup by Mike Millsip followed by five straight by Paz, which gave the Warriors their first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 52-50.

The Huskies re-took the lead with 10:59 on the clock, and built their advantage back to double-digits just over two minutes later following a 16-4 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Anderson followed by a big dunk from Maqi Watson.

ESU cut the deficit back down to six, 73-67, with just under five minutes remaining in the contest, but that was as close as the Warriors would get, as the BU offense continued to put up points en route to the 87-75 victory.

ESU rounds out its two-game home stand with a contest against Shippensburg this Saturday, January 11 at 3 p.m.
