EAST STROUDSBURG – A big first half from the East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team led the Warriors to an 89-72 win on Saturday in PSAC action at Koehler Fieldhouse, as they extended their win streak to a season-high seven straight games.
The Warriors, who improved to 17-8 overall and 13-7 in PSAC action following the win, remain in second place in the PSAC East standings with just two regular season games remaining. The top-two seeds in the division will receive a first-round bye in the PSAC Tournament and host a Quarterfinal matchup.
Mike Millsip went a perfect 7-of-7 overall from the field, including 2-of-2 from deep, as he helped power the Warriors to victory with a career-high 16 points. Rookies
Zach Sabol and
Justin Paz each chipped in 12 points, with Sabol also adding 12 rebounds to complete the first double-double of his young collegiate career.
ESU shot an efficient 58.6-percent from the floor as a team, including a 62.5-percent mark in a dominating first half. The Warriors outscored the Rams by a 50-24 margin in the opening half, and held Shepherd to just 33.3-percent shooting in the frame while forcing 10 turnovers.
The Warriors jumped all over Shepherd early, scoring 15 points in the first 3:16 of action to open a 15-4 advantage and force a timeout from the Rams before the first media stoppage.
Michal Weiss and Millsip led the charge during the early run, combining for 10 of the team's 15 points.
ESU was slowed down a bit during the middle stages of the half before stepping on the pedal and taking a commanding lead after a big run to end the frame. With the Warriors leading 28-18 under the halfway mark of the stanza, they went on a 22-6 run to close things out and extend their advantage to 50-24 at the intermission. Millsip poured in seven of his 16 points during the rally to end the half, while Paz added five of his 12.
In the second half, the Warriors spread out the scoring, with
Marc Rodriguez leading the team with seven points in the frame, and Millsip, Sabol and
Troy Jones each chipping in five.
ESU's lead was never in question throughout the second half, as the advantage dipped under 20 for only one possession before the final bucket of the game. The Warriors eventually closed out the 89-72 victory to make it seven straight wins.
ESU plays its final road game of the regular season this coming Wednesday, February 26 at Lock Haven. Opening tip from Thomas Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m.
