SAINT LEO, Fla. –
Krista Mitarotonda scored a career-high eight goals to propel the 12
th-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory at No. 16 Saint Leo in a battle of ranked teams on Friday night.
Mitarotonda registered her eight goals on 14 shots, while also adding five draw controls and three ground balls. The junior from Rockaway, New Jersey, who's looking to tally her third-consecutive 60-plus goal season, now has 10 goals through the opening pair of games for the Warriors.
Cassidy McKenna (2g) and
Hana Cicerelle (2a) each finished with two points, and four other Warriors added a goal apiece in the win.
Kayleigh Pokrivka was a force on defense for ESU, as she tied her career-high with four caused turnovers while also adding seven ground balls.
Tatyana Petteway improved to 2-0 in goal for the Warriors following an eight-save performance.
Mitarotonda netted each of the first three goals of the contest for ESU, and finished with four of the team's five tallies in the opening half.
Ashlee Wilsynski and Janee DeLuca notched two goals apiece in the half for Saint Leo, and the Warriors and Lions headed into the halftime break knotted at 5-5.
Kaci Archer put Saint Leo on top for the first time all game with the opening goal of the second half just 15 seconds in. The Warriors quickly answered however, getting three straight goals from Mitarotonda,
Juliane Fitzsimmons and McKenna to jump in front by a pair.
Shannon Dent made it four consecutive goals for ESU with her tally at the 22:02 mark, which pushed the Warrior lead to 9-6.
With ESU holding a 10-7 advantage with 17:09 remaining, Mitarotonda took the game into her own hands, tallying three straight goals in a span of less than four minutes to give the Warriors a commanding 13-7 lead.
Saint Leo (3-2) was able to whittle the deficit down to 13-9 following goals from DeLuca and Archer, before McKenna answered with her second goal of the tilt, which essentially sealed the win for the Warriors, as they would go on for the 14-10 victory to improve to 2-0 on the year.
ESU outshot Saint Leo by a 41-28 margin in the contest and held a 36-29 advantage on ground balls. Draw controls were even in the game at 13-13.
The Warriors remain in Florida to take on Gannon in a neutral site matchup this Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. at Rollins College.
