ESU Men’s Basketball Holds Off Bloomsburg to Record Third Straight Win

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University held off a late second half rally by Bloomsburg and came away with a 99-88 victory over the Huskies on Wednesday night in PSAC men's basketball action at Nelson Field House.

Michal Weiss had an extremely efficient night, going 9-of-10 from the field en route to a game-high 20 points, which matched his career high. Weiss also grabbed eight boards in the contest.

Marc Rodriguez drained a trio of three-pointers and recorded 14 points, while Justin Paz went 4-of-9 from the floor and finished with 12 points. Troy Jones and Carlos Pepin registered 10 points each to round out the double-figure scorers on the night for the Warriors. Pepin also added a career-high 10 boards, as he collected the first double-double of his career.

The victory was the third straight for the Warriors, pushing them to 13-8 overall on the year and 9-7 in conference play. Bloomsburg dropped to 8-14 overall and 5-11 in the PSAC following the loss. ESU now owns a 14-2 record in the last 16 meetings with Bloomsburg.

In a fast-paced and high-scoring opening to the game, the Warriors grabbed their first double-digit advantage of the night, 25-15, at the midway mark of the first half on a long ball from Jones.

Bloomsburg made it a five-point game just a minute later, but ESU quickly answered and stretched the lead to the largest to that point, 40-28, following a long three by Montrel Morgan with 7:06 on the clock.

With the Warrior lead cut down to seven heading under the three-minute mark, Rodriguez and Paz hit consecutive threes. On the next possession, Rodriguez was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three at the line to make it a 57-45 game with 1:50 left in the half.

Rodriguez continued his hot three-point shooting in the stanza, draining his third triple of the game with 47 ticks left for the half's final bucket, as the Warriors carried a 60-45 advantage into the half.

ESU shot 57.6-percent from the field in the opening half and made 7-of-12 (.583) from deep. Rodriguez led the way with 14 points in the frame, while Paz (13) and Weiss (10) also tallied double-figures.

The Warriors continued to hit from downtown early in the second half, as Kitt Najee Walls, Jones and Shamir Johnson each connected from deep in the opening five minutes to help ESU extend its lead to 20 points for the first time of the contest.

Bloomsburg countered with an 8-2 run in the ensuing minutes to cut its deficit to 73-59, but Weiss answered with six straight to push the Warrior advantage back to 20 with 12:26 showing on the clock.

With ESU holding an 86-67 lead with 7:34 remaining in the game, Bloomsburg rattled off 13 straight points, with Travis Elmore and Peyton Mortellite combining for nine during the run, as the Huskies cut the deficit down to 86-80 during a rally that took just under three minutes.

The Warriors continued to hold a six-point advantage heading under the three-minute mark when Walls came up with a huge steal on the defensive end. ESU converted on the other end on a bucket in the paint from Weiss, which gave him 20 points on the night as he matched his career-high. The basket from Weiss stretched the ESU lead to 92-84 with 2:35 remaining.

After a Bloomsburg bucket from Elmore, ESU responded as Pepin found Jones down low, where he laid one off the glass and in to make it a 94-86 game with 1:26 left.

On the next possession, Pepin came up with a huge steal on the defensive end for the Warriors and dished to a streaking Walls, who went in and slammed it down to make it a 10-point game with just 46 seconds remaining and essentially seal the win.

ESU would close things out from there and go on for the 99-88 victory to push its win streak to three straight.

The Warriors shot 47.8-percent from the field and made 10-of-26 (.385) from deep in the tilt. They went 7-of-12 (.583) from three-point territory in the opening half, but just 3-of-14 (.214) in the second. With 10 triples in the contest, ESU has now drained 10 or more from long range eight times this season.

ESU returns to action this Saturday, February 8 for a home matchup against Millersville at 3 p.m. The Warriors will hold an alumni game earlier in the day at 11 a.m.
