ESU Softball Drops Pair of Tight Games at Lynn in Season-Opening Doubleheader

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A seventh inning rally from East Stroudsburg University came up just short in the season-opening game at Lynn, and the Fighting Knights followed with a strong pitching performance in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep over the Warriors on Friday.

ESU was edged by a 6-5 margin in the 2020 opener, and Lynn prevailed in game two by a 5-2 final behind a complete game effort from Allyson Jameston.

GAME 1: Lynn 6, ESU 5 | Box Score

The Warriors rallied for a pair of runs in the final inning on a pinch-hit two-run single from freshman Katherine Donaghue, but Lynn was able to escape the jam and pull out a 6-5 victory in the opening game.

Sofia Cecchin went 2-for-2 at the dish with one RBI and two stolen bases, and Lexi Wright added a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Donaghue got a hit and drove in a pair of runs in her first collegiate at-bat.

The Fighting Knights jumped out to an early lead in the contest, bringing home a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk to Bailey Fernandez followed by a run-scoring wild pitch. ESU got one back in the next inning as Cecchin drove in Rachel Seiverd to score the Warriors' first run of the season and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Warriors went down 6-1 but battled back with a pair of runs in the fifth, as Cecchin scored on a passed ball and Caleen drove in Kaylee Hazewski, which trimmed the Lynn lead to 6-3.

Lynn brought in Olivia Saviskas to relieve Kayla Sheffield on the mound, but Saviskas walked the bases loaded with two outs before Sheffield was brought back in to try to finish what she started.

The Warriors sent Donaghue to the plate as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded, as she represented the go-ahead run with ESU trailing by three. Donaghue took advantage of her first career at-bat, lacing a single to right to score MacKenzie Lewis and Caleen to make it a 6-5 game.

Rachel Seiverd came the plate for the Warriors with runners on first and second, but Sheffield was able to get Seiverd to fly out to right, as the Fighting Knights escaped with the 6-5 win.

GAME 2: Lynn 5, ESU 2 | Box Score

Jameston turned in a complete game to help propel Lynn to a 5-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader. Marissa Govan drove in both of ESU's runs with a double to lead the way on offense for the Warriors.

Lynn recorded the first run of game two in the first inning on an RBI single to left from Shayle Arenson. The Knights then broke things open with a four-run fifth inning, as Emily Yakel and Shannon Johnson each knocked in a pair of runs in the frame.

Similar to the first game, the Warriors showed their fight and battled back, striking for two runs in the top of the sixth. Denva Shaw-Tait and Cecchin got on base to begin the rally, and Govan drove in both of them with a two-run double, which cut the ESU deficit to 5-2.

ESU wasn't able to complete the comeback in the final inning as Jameston got the Warriors 1-2-3 to finish off her complete game performance. Jameston finished the game with five strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Junior transfer Marah Range, who made her first appearance with the Warriors, turned in a solid effort, striking out four batters in 6.0 innings of work.

ESU continues its Florida road trip with a doubleheader at Barry University tomorrow, February 8 beginning at 1 p.m. in Miami Shores.
