EAST STROUDSBURG – The 12
th-ranked ESU women's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-6 victory over visiting Millersville on Saturday at Whitenight Field in the first PSAC East game of the season for both teams.
Hana Cicerelle and
Gianna LeDuc keyed the Warrior offense in the win, as the pair both posted six points on four goals and two assists each. Cicerelle also added a team-high four draw controls and four caused turnovers. The senior midfielder surpassed the 200-point plateau in her career, becoming just the seventh Warrior in program history to accomplish the feat. Cicerelle now ranks fifth all-time in ESU history with 203 career points.
Kiki Fitzpatrick (2g, 1a),
Krista Mitarotonda (3g) and
Bailey McMaster (2g, 1a) chipped in with three points apiece, and
Shannon Dent (1g, 1a) was the other Warrior to post a multi-point effort. Mitarotonda sits in fifth place on ESU's all-time career goals list with 144.
Tatyana Petteway registered five saves in 48:26 of action between the pipes to record her fourth win of the season. The senior also notched a pair of caused turnovers and four ground balls in the contest.
Michelle Dyck finished out the final 11:34 of play in goal for the Warriors.
ESU (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) posted a dominating stretch in which they outscored Millersville (2-2, 0-1 PSAC) by a 16-1 margin over a period of 33:31 spanning the first and second halves.
The Warriors were slow to get things going on the offensive end as the Marauders limited them to just one goal in the opening 14-plus minutes of play while building a 3-1 advantage.
Cicerelle and McMaster then struck for a pair of quick tallies to tie the game at 3-3 and begin what would eventually become a 16-1 run for the Warriors.
Fitzpatrick gave ESU its first lead of the contest at the 10:03 mark, and LeDuc followed with back-to-back scores to make it a 6-3 game with 6:13 remaining in the half. Dent netted the final goal of the frame to send the Warriors into the break with a 7-3 advantage.
ESU came out firing in the second half, registering the first four goals in a span of less than five minutes to stretch the lead to 11-3 at the 25:32 mark. Mitarotonda tallied a pair of goals and Cicerelle notched her third of the game during the stretch.
Millersville's Hayden Corcoran capitalized off a feed from Calie Swegon at the 25:17 mark to put an end to a stretch of 10 straight goals by ESU, but the Marauders' tally didn't slow down the Warriors' momentum one bit, as they rattled off the next six goals while holding Millersville scoreless for the ensuing 16 minutes. LeDuc led the charge with a pair of tallies during the stretch that extended the ESU lead to 17-4.
Elaina Ohlson got ESU's final goal of the contest as the Warriors closed out the dominating 18-6 victory to grab their fourth straight win to begin the season.
ESU outshot Millersville 28-13 in the tilt and held a 21-16 advantage on ground balls, while Millersville won the battle on draw controls, 15-10.
The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, March 10 to take on No. 3 Lindenwood in a neutral site matchup at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
