ESU Wins Game One Against Bloomfield, 12-0; Warriors and Bears Draw 3-3 in Game Two

STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team closed a three-game series on Saturday against Bloomfield College with a 12-0 win in game one and a 3-3 tie in game two at Creekview Park.

ESU (12-1-2) allowed just one hit in the opener before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two. The second game would be called due to darkness following six innings of play. The last time that ESU had two ties was during the 1982 season.

Four different Warriors notched multi-hit games in the opener as junior Brainy Rojas, senior Carson Freeman, sophomore Logan Stirr, and senior Joey Paolini each tallied two hits. Rojas, Stirr, and Paolini finished with two runs batted in for ESU, while five other players had one RBI each.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Chase Nowak would be in complete control on the mound for the Warriors as he yielded just one hit through six innings of work. Nowak notched 10 strikeouts while allowing just one walk and lost his bid for a no-hitter in the top of the fifth inning.

The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Rojas and Freeman delivered run-scoring hits to increase the lead to 3-0. Three more runs would score for ESU in the bottom of the fifth inning as Paolini and Rojas notched RBI singles to push the advantage to 6-0 for the Warriors.

ESU opened the game up offensively in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Warriors plated six runs off three hits to extend the lead to 12-0. Stirr opened the scoring in the frame with a single that allowed junior Brock Kauffman to score and make it 8-0. Redshirt junior Sirwalter Melendez and freshman Ben Stokes would both be walked with the bases loaded to push the score to 10-0.

Freshman Hunter Simpson added an RBI with a groundout to the first baseman to score freshman Tim Haverstick, before Kauffman closed the scoring in the frame with a single to plate Melendez and make it 12-0.

Nowak improved to 3-0 on the season for the Warriors after recording the shutout before giving way to the ESU bullpen for the seventh inning. Sophomore JP Nolan tossed the final inning for the Warriors and fanned three of the four batters that he faced to close the contest.

Game two would feature pitching over offense for both sides as Bloomfield scored a pair of runs in the third inning and one in the sixth, while ESU scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior left-hander Cam Voss would get the start for the Warriors and tallied three strikeouts through the first two innings to keep the Bears off the scoreboard. Voss, who entered the contest without having allowed a run to score against him, saw Bloomfield plate two runs in the top of the third inning.

The Bears scored the opening run of the contest off a fielder's choice that allowed a runner to score from third to make it 1-0. Bloomfield later scored off an error by the Warriors to extend the lead to 2-0. Voss escaped any further damage in the frame by getting a strikeout and fly out to strand two runners on base.

Senior Tyler Guidos tossed the final two innings out of the bullpen for ESU and worked a clean fifth inning before allowing one run to score in the top of the sixth. The Bears opened the sixth with a single before Guidos responded with back-to-back strikeouts. A two-out single with a runner on third allowed the Bears to take a 3-0 edge before Guidos recorded another strikeout for the third out.

The Warriors would get things going offensively in the bottom half of the frame as senior Anthony Torreullas delivered a two-out single. A hit batter and walk would load the bases for ESU and started a string of three consecutive walks to force in three runs to knot the score 3-3. The Warriors would be unable to complete the walk-off victory as Bloomfield would get a strikeout to end the inning.
