LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- After two impressive performances that featured 139 yards of rushing, two touchdowns and 3.5 sacks, the PSAC announced on Monday that tailback Gunner Anglovich and defensive end Deshawn McCarthy were named PSAC East Athletes of the Week. Anglovich was seleceted the PSAC East Athlete of the Week, while McCarthy garners PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Anglovich was selected as the PSAC East Athlete of the Week after rushing for 139 yards on 21 carries (6.6 yards per carry) and ESU's first two touchdowns in a 27-7 Homecoming victory over Millersville. With ESU leading 6-0 on a pair of field goals, Anglovich would find the end zone on runs of 11 yards and a career-long run of 55 yards touchdown to take a 20-0 lead. The Bethlehem, Pa. native leads the conference in rushing and ranks 14th nationally in rushing with 643 yards and 107.2 yards of rushing per game. He is leads the league and ranks 11th in the country in rushing touchdowns with 11 in six games this season.
McCarthy's impressive 3.5 sack performance against the Marauders the led pass rush that recorded eight sacks - the most by a Warrior team since the 2013 season against Kutztown. He registered seven tackles total against MU. The Philadelphia native now leads the PSAC in sack and is tied with Tylen Coleman from Western New Mexico for the national lead in NCAA Division II. McCarthy has recorded at least a ½ sack in five of six games this season. Both McCarthy and Coleman have averaged 1.75 sacks per game through six weeks in 2021. It's the second time that McCarthy has earned defensive athlete of the week honors this season, after totaling four sacks against Pace in the season opener. He joins Matt Freed (5x), Kevin Nagle, Fred Rice and Bryan Thomson as Warriors to earn multiple PSAC defensive athlete of the week honors in their career.
It's the first time that ESU has earned PSAC East Offensive Athlete and Defensive Athlete of the Week since 2017, when Jaymar Anderson, Sekou Jones and Marquis Fells (Special Teams) swept the weekly honors against Lock Haven. It's just the 11th time that the Warriors earned conference offensive and defensive player of the week honors in the same week since 1995.
Anglovich, McCarthy and the rest of the Warriors are back on the road next Saturday, heading south to John Farrell Stadium to face West Chester. Kickoff against the Golden Rams is set for Noon.
