PHILADELPHIA – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team extended its winning-streak to four games with a back-and-forth five set win (25-15, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12) over USciences on Tuesday evening at Bobby Morgan Arena.
After being named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week, senior Ali Finch played a huge role in the Warriors victory as she recorded her fourth triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 36 assists and 10 digs. The Cadillac, Mich. native posted a .529 hitting percentage to go along with two aces and five blocks
The Warriors improve to 8-8 on the season while the Devils drop to 3-8 overall.
Notables
- Sophomore Claire Choloux registered a team-high 12 kills as well as four assists and nine digs
- Junior Sydney Stone posted 11 kills, 17 assists and five blocks
- Freshman Taylor Haan had an impressive 10 kills, 19 digs and three blocks
- Senior Emily Meredith recorded a team-leading 22 digs
- The Warriors tied a season-high with 13 blocks as a team
How it Happened
- The Warriors wasted no time grabbing the lead as they jumped out in front 8-3 before USciences called a timeout. ESU kept the momentum rolling out of the break as they scored 10 of the next 13 points before the Devils were forced to call their second timeout. USciences found their grove making the score 21-14 before the Warriors went on a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-15.
- USciences carried over their play from late in the first set to the second as they built a 14-8 lead, which forced the Warriors to call a timeout. ESU couldn't find a rhythm out of the break as USciences extended their advantage to 18-10 before another timeout by the Warriors. USciences had a chance to close out the set at 24-14, but the Warriors fended off four straight set points before the Devils won 25-18 to even the match at 1-1.
- The Devils raced out to 5-0 lead and held at least a four-point advantage until the Warriors brought the score within one at 11-10. After USciences regained a 13-10 edge, ESU ripped off four straight points to take a 14-13 lead that forced the Devils to call a timeout. ESU kept the pressure on USciences as they went ahead 22-17 before the Devils brought it within three. However, the Warriors scored three of the final four points to win the set, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead on the Devils.
- With the scored at 8-6 in favor of the Devils, there was stoppage by the referees that resulted in a point for USciences, who ultimately went out ahead 13-8. ESU proceeded to go on a 5-0 run after five straight errors by the Devils to tie the set at 13-13. USciences answered by scoring seven of the next 11 points to take a 21-16 lead, but that was quickly cut to one by the Warriors after a 4-0 sprint. After a timeout by the Devils, they would close out the set at 25-21 to even the match at 2-2.
- It was a back-and-forth fifth set as both teams traded leads until the Devils went out in front 8-7, which prompted a timeout by the Warriors. ESU responded to take a 12-11 lead and after two timeouts by USciences, the Warriors would go on to win the fifth set, 15-12 to take the match.
