No. 5 Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 10 IUP, 5-0

EAST STROUDSBURG – The fifth-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team won their fifth consecutive game and had five different goal scorers in their 5-0 route of tenth-ranked IUP on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors improve to 12-3 on the season and 6-1 in the PSAC having picked up wins in 12 of their last 13 games. IUP drops to 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference following their second straight loss.

Prior to today's game, the Warriors honored six members of their 2020 senior class that had their careers cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those individuals were Lexi Hartmann, Melanie Nicodemo, Gina Lobdell, Jada Martin, Margaret Fulton and Micayla Bonargo.

Notables

- Amy Supey (12-3) was credited with the win after making three saves. She combined with sophomore Emma Valinote for ESU's second shutout of the week

- Senior Hannah Barbush picked up her second goal and seventh/eighth assists of the seasons. Barbush now leads the PSAC in assists

- Senior Celeste Veenstra recorded her team-high eighth goal and first assist of the year. Veenstra's eight scores are now tied for eighth in the conference

- Junior Madison Kline gave the Warriors an early lead with her fourth goal of the campaign in the first period

- Senior Becca Heffner followed up a rebound for her third goal of the year in the first half

- Redshirt senior Jordyn Wigglesworth found the back of the net for the first time this season in the third quarter

- Senior Morgan Mesenbrink collected her second assist of the campaign on Veenstra's goal

- ESU held the advantage in shots on goal, 11-3

- The Warriors were awarded more penalty corners, 12-3

How it Happened

8:39 | The Warriors took advantage of their first penalty corner of the game with a goal from Kline to grab a 1-0 lead. Helen Bradley interested the ball to Hannah Barbush, before she dished off a pass to Kline, who took a bouncing shot that snuck inside the left post to put the Warriors out in front.

27:40 | After an initial shot on goal by Lia Parker was saved, Heffner gained controlled of the rebound before firing off a quick shot through the legs of IUP goalkeeper Amanda Zaner to move the Warriors ahead 2-0.

40:31 | In the opening minutes of the second half, the Warriors stretched their advantage to 3-0 with a goal from Wigglesworth. Grace Lesh sent in an initial pass off the penalty corner to Hannah Barbush, who moved to her right before ripping a shot that redirected off the stick of Wigglesworth into the back of the net for her first score of the year.

47:47 | ESU was successful on their third penalty corner of the game as Veenstra sent a rocket into goal to push the Warriors' lead to 4-0. Mesenbrink sent in the original pass before Veenstra took a settling touch and loaded for a blast which ended up in the top left corner of the net for her eighth goal of the year.

49:30 | After recording a pair of assists earlier in the game, Hannah Barbush joined the scoring party less than two minutes later with her second goal of the season. Veenstra received the pass of the penalty corner before dropping off the ball to Barbush, who made a move towards the crease before firing a backhanded shot into goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of ESU.

The Warriors return to the road on Tuesday, Oct. 19 with a trip to second-ranked West Chester. The Warriors and Golden Rams square off at 4:00 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field in key PSAC matchup as both teams have one loss in conference play.
