SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team opened its 2021-22 campaign on Wednesday night by falling to Le Moyne, 82-48, on Ted Grant Court.
The Warriors drop to 0-1 to begin the season while the Dolphins improve to 1-0.
Freshman Rachel Capua paced the Warriors with 12 points, converting 4 of her 9 attempts from the field and in her ESU debut, graduate student Ryan Weise added nine points.
Junior Claire Courter registered six points and a team-high five rebounds while sophomore Gwenn Sabato finished with six point and grabbed four rebounds.
The inexperienced Warriors shot 18-of-57 (31.6), 7-of-20 from behind the arc and were forced into 22 turnovers by the Dolphins.
Le Moyne was led by Emma Brinker with 26 points and Saeeda Abdul-Aziz, who poured in 21 points. As a team, the Dolphins were 28-of-68 (41.2) from the field and 7-of-15 (46.7) from 3-point land.
At the charity stripe, Le Moyne finished 19-of-28 compared to 5-of-7 for the Warriors.
ESU scuffled out of the gates as they found themselves trailing 24-6 at the end of the first quarter. Le Moyne shot 53.3% from the field and forced the Warriors into 11 turnovers. In the second quarter, ESU found their footing, as they scored 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting, but were outscored by five points and found themselves trailing at the half, 45-22.
The Warriors opened the second half on an 8-2 run after a pair of three-pointers from Courter and Capua, but Le Moyne used a 9-0 sprint to regain a 26-point advantage into the media timeout. The teams traded buckets the rest of the third quarter with the Dolphins holding a 62-40 lead.
Le Moyne regained their form in the fourth quarter as they outgained the Warriors, 20-8, after shooting 46.7 percent compared to only 13.3 percent for the Warriors to secure the 82-48 victory.
