Women’s Basketball Drops PSAC Opener to Slippery Rock, 73-60

SLIPPERY ROCK – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped its PSAC opener to Slippery Rock, 73-60, on Wednesday afternoon at Morrow Field House.

The Warriors head into December 0-3 on the young season and 0-1 in the PSAC, while Slippery Rock goes to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

ESU trailed by as many as 20 points at halftime and cut the deficit to six with over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter but Slippery Rock held on for the 13-point victory.

Notables

- Freshman Izzy Vogel led ESU with a career-high 15 points, finishing 3-of-5 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to go along with five rebounds, three steals and an assist

- Graduate student Ryan Weise (10 points, three steals) and freshman Rachel Capua (10 points, six rebounds) also recorded double-digit points for the Warriors

- Freshman Katie Geisler added eight points and six rebounds while freshman Corrin Gill dished out a team-high five assists.

- The Warriors had a balanced scoring attack with nine different players recording at least two points.

- ESU finished 18-of-50 (36.0) from the floor and 5-of-17 (29.4) from behind the three-point line but were forced into 19 turnovers

- Daeja Quick led Slippery Rock with 20 points and Jamiyah Johnson added 19 points. The Rock were steady from the floor all afternoon, finishing 26-of-55 (47.3) overall and 7-of-16 (43.8) from behind the arc.

- Despite not shooting a free throw in the first half, the Warriors held the edge going 19-of-22 overall while The Rock finished 14-of-19

How It Happened

- ESU and Slippery Rock opened the game tied a 2-2 but a quick 11-0 run by The Rock put them ahead 13-2 midway through the first quarter. The Warriors outscored Slippery Rock the rest of the way, 11-10, but found themselves trailing 23-13 after the first 10 minutes.

- After neither team scored for two minutes to begin the second quarter, ESU and Slippery Rock traded buckets into the media timeout with The Rock holding a 12-point edge at 29-17. The Warriors would score just two points over the final 3:11 over and Slippery Rock finished on a 7-0 run to take a 39-19 lead into the half.

- The Warriors found their rhythm to begin the second half going 3-of-3 from the field and hitting a pair of free throws, but Slippery Rock scored seven points to maintain a 19-point advantage headed into the media timeout. ESU would go on to close out the third quarter on a 17-10 run after converting 11-of-13 free throw attempts and trailed Slippery Rock by just 12 points, 56-44.

- ESU opened the final quarter on 6-0 run with the help of a Slippery Rock technical foul to cut their deficit to six, but The Rock answered with a quick 5-0 spurt to go ahead 61-50 into the media break. The Warriors trimmed their deficit to 10 points with 3:57 remaining in the game, but the teams traded buckets the rest of the way as Slippery Rock secured the win, 73-60.
