WACO, TEXAS -- The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced on Wednesday that East Stroudsburg University football defensive end Deshawn McCarthy has been named AFCA Division II All-American First Team. McCarthy was among the best pass rushers in the nation, totaling 13 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss.
His 13 sacks are tied for the second most in the Division II with Tylen Coleman from Western New Mexico. It's the most quarterback takedowns from behind the line of scrimmage for ESU since 1992 and his 17.5 tackles for loss are the most by a Warrior since 2009. He registered at least a half sack in eight of 11 contests. He totaled 41 tackles, five pass breakups, and a fumble recovery.
McCarthy is just the second ESU defensive end to earn All-American status from the AFCA, joining Ray Yakavonis, one of ESU's two NFL Draft selections. Yakavonis earned the honor in 1979.

McCarthy joins kicker Jordan Walters (2019), wide receiver Jon Schnaars (2015), defensive back Curtis Bunch (1991), quarterback Andy Baranek (1984), linebacker Mike Reichenbach (1983), defensive end Ray Yakavonis (1979) and defensive back Willard Stem (1975) as AFCA All-Americans. Among all organizations, McCarthy is the 34th All-American in program history and 314th ever among all ESU teams.
The native of the City of Brotherly Love previously earned D2CCA Super Region 1 Second Team honors and All-PSAC East First Team accolades.
