No. 11 Warriors Lacrosse Tops Millersville, 14-7

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Paced by four goals and two assists from graduate student Hana Cicerelle, the No. 11 East Stroudsburg University lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with a 14-7 victory over Millersville on Wednesday afternoon at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Warriors (3-0, 2-0) now set its eyes on No. 5 West Chester on Tues., March 23 at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The Marauders (1-2, 1-1) will also host WCU in its next outing on Sat., March 20.

"We had a lot of opportunities today that we did not translate into goals," said ESU lacrosse head coach Xeni Barakos-Yoder. Millersville played a strong game and challenged us. Tatyana Petteway had another great showing today along with Hana Cicerelle. Looking forward to us putting two halves together next time we hit the field."

Eight Warriors found the back of the cage, with Cicerelle leading the way with six points (4 goals, 2 assists). Freshman Emily Mitarotonda posted three goals for the hat trick and grabbed an impressive 10 of the Warriors' 15 draw controls on the day. Through three games in her career, the native of Rockaway, N.J. has recorded eight goals, six ground balls, five caused turnovers and 21 draw controls.

Senior Brielle Curtis scored twice to round out the multi-goal players for ESU. Shannon Dent, Elaina Ohlson, Mary Fitzsimmons, Kiki Fitzpatrick and Gianna LeDuc also tallied goals against the Marauders.

Tatyana Petteway (3-0), the reigning PSAC East defensive athlete of the week, registered seven saves in net for her 49th career victory at ESU.

Millersville opened the scoring 38 seconds into the game, but the Warriors quickly responded to knot the score at 1-1, following a goal from Olivia Wenrich.

Both teams continued to trade goals, as MU and ESU both posted scores in the third minute, with Curtis posting her first goal on an unassisted play.

After the Marauders took a 3-2 lead, ESU dialed in and scored seven of the next eight goals, including a 5-0 stretch, as the Warriors took an 8-4 lead at halftime. E. Mitarotonda and Cicerelle were responsible for four of the five goals in the stretch that lifted ESU to the four-goal halftime lead.

E. Mitarotonda opened the scoring in the second half to complete her hat trick performance. After two MU goals cut ESU's lead to 9-6, goals from Elaina Ohlson and Kiki Fitzpatrick would lift the Warriors back to a five-goal advantage at 11-6.

With 6:24 remaining, MU found struck one final time. Curtis and two goals form Cicerelle in the final 4:10 of second half would lift ESU to a 14-7 triumph over Millersville.

ESU led in shots on goal (27-14), draw controls (15-8) and free position shots (5-3). The Warriors registered clears in 18 of 19 trips across the field. 

NOTES: ESU has now won five consecutive meetings with Millersville, dating back to 2017 … Cicerelle continues to climb in the ESU record books. She is tied for second in career assists (78), fourth in points (219) and sixth in goals (141).

UP NEXT: The Warriors return to Eiler-Martin Stadium on Tues, March 23 against No. 5 West Chester.  The opening draw is slated for 3:00 p.m.
