Warriors Finish Second in Virtual Vulcan Invitational

ESU wins four events in its second virtual meet

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University swimming team finished second among four PSAC teams in the Virtual Vulcan Invitational this past weekend. The Warriors posted 129 points for second place, while Lock Haven won the event with a score of 142. Millersville (97 pts.) and Cal U (91 pts.) rounded out the competing teams. Each team competed at their respective home pools, with results being compiled on Sunday night. 

The Warriors were the first team to compete on Friday night and earned wins in four of the 14 events. Freshmen Maddie Tafe and Jenna Johnson led the way with a combined three victories, while senior Taylor Howery also earned a win on the weekend for ESU.   

Tafe bested four competitors in the 1000-yd freestyle, posting a time of 12:12.87. She finished nearly seven seconds ahead of Lock Haven's Kandace Loup in the event. The native of Sayville, N.Y. also reached for the touchpad first in the 500-yd freestyle (5:55.05), besting the four other swimmers from Cal U, Lock Haven (2) and ESU. 

Johnson picked up a triumph in the 200-yd backstroke clocking a time of 2:19.60. The product of Sun Valley High School also earned runner up honors in the 200-yd freestyle (2:09.57) and the 400-yd individual medley (5:07.54). 

Howery earned a first-place nod in both the 100-yd backstroke (1:04.34). Junior Sarah Luigard registered times of 2:27.84 in the 200-yd butterfly 1:03.53 in the 100-yd butterfly in a pair of second-place finishes.

In the relays, the crew of Howery, Harnish, Luigard and Tafe clocked a time of 1:59.88 in the 200-yd medley relay to earn third place. Tafe, Johnson, Samntha Christman and Howery closed the meet with a mark of 1:48.97 in the 200-yd freestyle relay in a fourth-place finish.

The Warriors are set to host the ESU Invitational on Sat., April 3 in its next scheduled competition.
