EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Despite scoring 13 runs on 11 hits with four home runs, the East Stroudsburg University baseball team dropped a 28-13 decision to Kutztown in a nine-inning non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Creekview Park.
The Golden Bears improved to 11-7 overall after recording 28 runs on 26 hits while the Warriors dropped to 10-7 on the season.
Redshirt senior
Carson Freeman paced the Warriors on offense as he finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs batted in, three runs scored and two walks. The Bangor, Pa. native moved into a tie for second all-time for home runs in program history with 19 after recording pair of long balls today.
Freshman
Patrick Morrisey started his second career game behind the plate today and went 1-for-2 with a home run, one run scored, one RBI and one walk. The Saucon Valley native recorded his first career four-base hit on a solo shot to lead off the fourth.
Ricky Bromirski clubbed the Warriors fourth homer of the game after coming on as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth. The freshman delivered a three-run shot to left field in the home half of the seventh as he finished 1-for-3 at the dish.
The Golden Bears took advantage of a leadoff triple to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. On the first pitch he saw, Ethan Martini ended up on third on a ball down the right field line which set up Collin Bishop for an RBI single.
ESU responded in the bottom half of the inning with one hit and three walks to push across three runs. After loading the bases with one out, Stirr worked a six pitch walk to plate the Warriors first run.
Tim Haverstick followed with a sacrifice fly to right for the second run of the inning and after Paolini was hit by a pitch, Freeman raced home on a passed ball to make the score 3-1.
Kutztown answered with a three-run home run in the top of the second inning from Mitchell Peers to regain a 4-3 lead. Andy Blum manufactured a leadoff walk and Zach Moretski singled to set up Peers with one out, who delivered with a no doubter to center field.
The Golden Bears added five runs on four hits in the very next inning to push their advantage to 9-3. The frame was highlighted by Kutztown's second three-run homer of the day, this time off the bat of Zach Moretski.
The Warriors got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a leadoff home run from Morrisey, his first of the season, to cut the score to 9-4.
Kutztown hit their third three-run home run of the game in the top of the fifth inning to push their lead to 12-4. Antonio Rossillo doubled, and Zach Moretski walked to set up Dominic Proietto for a shot to left center. Freeman smashed the second Warriors' solo homer of the game in the home half of the inning trim Kutztown's lead to 12-5.
The Golden Bears exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the top of the sixth to push their advantage to 20-5. Kutztown scored sevens runs with two outs and recorded five straight hits during the inning.
After Zach Moretski hit his second home run of the afternoon in the top of seventh, the Warriors erupted with seven runs on four hits and five walks in the bottom half of the frame to cut Kutztown's edge to 21-12. ESU sent 12 guys to the plate in the inning which was highlighted by a leadoff homer from Freeman, his second of the game and a three-run shot from Bromirski that eventually cut the deficit to 10. Jerome Repetz drew a pair of walks in the inning.
The Golden Bears' offense was not finished yet as they scored seven runs on five hits in the top of the eighth to reextend their lead to 28-12. ESU tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth when Piatkiewicz came around to score on a
Zack Hynes groundout after leading off with a double.
Kutztown's Steve Wagner was credited with the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Wagner replaced Golden Bears' starter Trevor Leverington, who yielded three runs (two earned) on two hits in 3.0 innings.
Martini led Kutztown offensively going 5-for-7 with a triple, a double, four runs scored and three RBIs. 13 different Kutztown players recorded a hit in the contest and the Golden Bears drew a total of 10 walks.
ESU starter Tom Resinger was handed the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over 2.0 innings. The Warriors bullpen was charged with 21 runs on 21 hits over the final seven innings. The 28 runs surrendered by the Warriors' pitching staff was the most they allowed since 24 to West Chester back on March 28, 2010.
