No. 2 Field Hockey Falls at No. 10 Stonehill, 1-0

NORTH EASTON, MA. – The second-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team fell to tenth-ranked Stonehill, 1-0, on Saturday in their season-opener at W.B. Mason Stadium.

With the game tied at 0-0 in the fourth quarter, the Skyhawks put a shot in the back of the goal on a rebound from Raegan Hickey to take a 1-0 lead. The Warriors (0-1) had a penalty corner chance in the closing seconds but were unable to net the game-tying score.

Notables

- Sophomore Amy Supey (0-1) made four saves in her first career collegiate start

- Juniors Nicole Krozser, Madison Kline and sophomore Grace Lesh each finished with a game-high two shots on goal for the Warriors. Senior Celeste Veenstra recorded three shots, senior Morgan Mesenbrink had two and junior Hanna Lewis tallied one.

- ESU held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal

- ESU had 8 penalty corners in the contest compared to Stonehill's one

How it Happened

- In the first quarter, the Warriors outshot the Skyhawks 5-1, and had two penalty corners. ESU's best scoring chances came on shots from Lewis and Krozser that were saved by Stonehill's' goalkeeper.

- Kline provided two goal opportunities early in the second quarter with a shot that sailed just wide followed up by chance off a penalty corner that was saved. Midway through the quarter, Supey was called to make her first save of the game on near breakaway chance from Olivia Cameron.

- The Warriors opened the third quarter with a penalty corner but neither team was able to generate any real scoring chances until a pair of shots from Lesh were saved at the 3:44 mark. With time running out in the frame, Hickey had a one-on-one chance with Supey, who made a huge save to keep the game scoreless.

- With 7:44 left in the fourth quarter, Stonehill found the back of the goal on a shot from Hickey to take a 1-0 lead. The Warriors got a penalty corner chance with seconds left on the clock but a shot from Veenstra went wide.

The Warriors have a quick turn around as they head to seventh-ranked Assumption on Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown against the Greyhounds.
