No. 2 Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision at No. 7 Assumption

WORCESTER, MA. – The second-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team fell to 0-2 to start the season after dropping a 1-0 decision to seventh-ranked Assumption on Sunday at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

The Greyhounds (1-1) broke a scoreless tie at the 13:50 mark in the third quarter and limited the Warriors' scoring chances the rest of the way to hold on for the victory.

Notables

- Sophomore Amy Supey (0-2) finished with three saves

- Senior Hannah Barbush paced the Warriors with a team-high three shots on goal while senior Morgan Mesenbrink added a pair. Senior Helen Bradley and freshman Jady van Gils also each recorded a shot on net for ESU.

- The Warriors outshot the Greyhounds 14-4, and held an advantage in shots on goal, 7-4

- Each team had five penalty corner opportunities in the game

How it Happened

- The Warriors were on the attack a majority of the first quarter as they outshot the Greyhounds 3-0 and had the lone penalty corner chance. Bradley and Mesenbrink gave ESU their best scoring chances on shots that were saved by Assumption's Kylie Gargiulo but the game remained tied at 0-0.

- ESU maintained their pressure throughout the second quarter but was unable to find the back of the net as the teams headed into the half scoreless. The Warriors best scoring opportunity came off the stick of Hannah Barbush seven seconds into the quarter but was stopped by the Greyhounds' goalkeeper. Late in the quarter, Assumption took two shots off a penalty corner that were kept out by Supey.

- With 13:50 left in the third quarter, Assumption took a 1-0 lead on goal from Leah Sabatini, who was set up on a pass from Mia Salah. The Warriors nearly evened the score with 8:05 left in the quarter when a pair of shots off a penalty corner by Hannah Barbush were stirred away.

- Through the first half of the fourth quarter, the teams traded possession on both ends and each recorded a shot on goal that was saved. The rest of the way, Assumption held ESU from recording a shot to hold on for the 1-0 win.
