Warriors Punch Ticket to Postseason by Handing No. 2 West Chester Its First Non-Winning Result

ESU will head back to Rockwell Field on Tuesday

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – An Emily Wineburg goal in the 81st minute ended a seven-game shutout streak for No. 2 West Chester and secured the fourth and final seed in the PSAC Tournament for the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team with a 1-1 draw with the Golden Rams on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell field.

The Warriors (9-6-3, 7-6-3) hand the Golden Rams (16-0-1, 15-0-1) its first non-winning result of the season will rematch on Tuesday in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinal round. The game time has not been announced yet.  

ESU trailed 1-0 in the 11th minute after a Julia Raybold goal, but never backed down. Wineburg's fourth goal of the season came 70 minutes later with less than 10 minutes left in the contest. WCU had opportunities to tie late on a free kick, but ESU goalkeeper Emily Clarkson made several great punches to prevent a late WCU goal.

Notables

  • Tallying assists were Mia Chapman for ESU and Maggie Lena for WCU, who both initiated the goals by inserting the corner kick.
  • West Chester led 21-7 on shots, 11-3 on shots on goal and 3-1 on corner kicks.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Emmy Clarkson made nine saves, matching her career best mark set against Shepherd.
  • Along with Wineburg's game-tying goal, Natalie Schooley and Brienn Seaman posted shots on goal.
  • West Chester had shutout its previous seven opponents and entered the game outscoring its foes 44-4. ESU now has scored two of the five goals allowed by the Golden Rams this season.
  • ESU is postseason bound for the seventh time over the past eight seasons. 

How It Happened

  • 11' | Off a corner kick, Maggie Lena sent in the corner kick to Julia Raybold, who was able to get a head on the ball in traffic and sent the shot past the Warrior goalkeeper to the left.
  • 81' | Chapman sent in the lone corner kick of the day from the far side that Wineburg was able to get a head on the ball and sent the shot to the lower right corner.
