Second Half Comeback Lifts Women’s Basketball Over Georgian Court

EAST STROUDSBURG – Trailing by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball mounted a 62-54 comeback victory over Georgian Court on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors bounce back from their loss the other day to improve to 4-1, which matches their win total from a season ago, while the Lions drop to 2-3 headed into conference play.

With Georgian Court leading 45-30 at the 2:26 mark in the third quarter, the Warriors ripped off a 16-0 run over the next four-plus minutes which carried over into the final period to regain a 46-45 advantage. Then with 2:52 remaining and the game knotted at 54-54, ESU would score the final eight points, which included a three-pointer from Jessica Polin to help complete the comeback for the Warriors.

Despite battling through foul trouble late in the contest, graduate student Ryan Weise paced the Warriors with a game-high 21 points (4-of-7 3 FG) to go along with six assists, two rebounds and a steal.

The graduate student continues to torment opposing defensive, averaging 28.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.6 blocks on a remarkable 72.4% (42-of-58) shooting from the field, 76.2% (32-of-42) from beyond the arc and 85.7% (24-of-28) from the free throw line.

  • Polin continues to play big time minutes off the bench for ESU as the sophomore finished with 11 points, one rebound, steal and block a piece
     
  • Junior Leah Pishock stepped up for the Warriors in 14 second-half minutes, recording eight points, which included key buckets down the stretch, as well as five rebounds
     
  • Sophomore Cassidy Saylor added seven points and seven rebounds while Carley Adams and Caitlin Marten combined for eight points
     
  • In 35 minutes, Shyla Sanford scored two points but came up huge on the glass and defensive end, totaling six rebounds and a pair of steals
     
  • Georgian Court held the edge in shooting percentage, going 18-of-47 (38.3%) from the field, 4-of-9 (44.4%) from three and 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the charity stripe. The Warriors finished 21-of-60 (35.0%) from the floor, 6-of-14 (42.9%) and just 14-of-25 (56.0%) from the free throw line.
     
  • The Warriors locked up Georgian Court in the second half, holding the Lions to just 6-of-25 (24.0%) shooting, which included a 1-of-9 (9.1%) effort in the fourth quarter
     
  • Rebounds were dead even at 38-38, but the Warriors held a huge advantage on the offensive end, out rebounding the Lions, 16-8
     
  • Georgian Court held the lead in the game for 30:45 minutes compared to just 6:59 for the Warriors
How It Happened
  • The Lions raced out in front 5-0 and were leading 7-2 until the Warriors scored six consecutive points, which included a three pointer from Weise and a layup from Polin to grab an 8-7 advantage. The teams caught fire over the next four minutes, combing to make 7-of-12 from the field, but Georgian Court ultimately took a 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
     
  • Georgian Court carried that momentum over into the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 7-2, to stretch their edge to 24-17. Out of the media break, ESU trimmed their deficit to as little as five points (24-19), but the Lions scored seven of the next nine points to grab a 31-21 lead headed into the half.
     
  • Over the first seven minutes of the second half, the Lions built a 13-point advantage on multiple occasions (35-22, 37-24, 39-26, 40-28 and 43-30), until grabbing their largest lead of the game at 45-30 with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter. From that point on, the Warriors ripped off a 9-0 spurt to trim to their disadvantage to 45-39 headed into the final 10 minutes.
     
  • The Warriors kept it rolling in the fourth quarter as Weise scored seven straight points to extend the run to 16-0, which regained the lead for ESU at 46-45. The graduate student scored the 12th consecutive point for ESU to put them back up 51-49, until the Lions regained the advantage at 52-51. With 2:52 remaining and the game tied at 54-54, ESU scored the last eight points of the contest to finish off the 62-54 come from behind victory. Polin broke the tie and Pishock made a layup and a pair of free throws to help propel the Warriors.
