BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Facing the second-ranked team in the country, the East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team fell to Mercyhurst, 3-0, in the PSAC Semifinals at Steph Pettit Stadium on Friday evening.
The Warriors close the 2022 season with an 8-9-3 record, while the Lakers (17-0-1), the PSAC West first seed advance to the PSAC Championship unscathed on Sunday afternoon against PSAC East first-seed Bloomsburg.
Notables
- Sean Kerrigan, who leads the PSAC and ranks second nationally in goals and points, tallied a pair of goals. Both of his goals came from penalty kicks.
- Nick Much also registered a goal for the Lakers.
- Scoring the final goal of the contest for ESU was Laurent Gjonmarkaj. Stelios Melekos posted an assist on the play. The goal snapped a 13-game shutout streak and was 'Hurst's first goal allowed since Sept. 7.
- The Lakers led 13-9 in shots, 4-3 on shots on goal and 6-4 corners.
- Warrior goalkeeper Helgi Hermannsson (3-3-3) closes his freshman season with an impressive goals against average of 1.03 and a save percentage of .756.
How It Happened
- 30' | On his first attempt, Kerrigan sent a shot to the lower right that found the back of the net. Hermannsson dove correctly and nearly got a hand on the shot.
- 36' | Not long after Kerrigan had another opportunity, as the Ireland native buried a shot to the same side, but had a bit of height on the shot. Hermannsson guessed correctly but could not make the save.
- 60' | Kerrigan found Nic Munch with an excellent pass, leading him on a breakaway. With just one Warrior defender in the vicinity and Hermannsson approaching, Munch sent a shot to the left of Hermannsson that rolled into the far-side corner.
- 74' | Melekos sent a through ball to Gjonmarkaj, who was able to get a shot off with a Laker defender and goalkeeper approaching from the far side. The shot faked out the goalie, with the ball finding the near-side corner.
