CALIFORNIA – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped their third straight game to California (Pa.), 69-50, in a PSAC crossover on Monday afternoon inside the Convocation Center.
The Warriors fall to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC while the Vulcans are now 6-4 on the season as well as 2-2 in the conference.
Notables
- Sophomore Jessica Polin led the Warriors with 11 points and five rebounds while graduate student Ryan Weise totaled double digit points with 10 to go with six rebounds and one assist
- The teams shot similar percentages from field as ESU was 19-of-49 (38.8%) overall and 7-of-20 (35.05) from three, while Cal was 24-of-62 (38.7%) from the floor and 8-of-20 (40.0%) from beyond the arc
- The Vulcans converted at the free throw line going 13-of-14 (92.9%) while the Warriors were just 5-of-12 (41.7%)
- Rajah Fink played nearly every minute for the Vulcans, recording 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Halle Herrington added 15 points five rebounds, four assists and two steals for Cal
- The Warriors committed 22 turnovers compared to 12 for the Cal
How It Happened
- With the scored tied at 3-3, the Vulcans went on a 14-3 run until Sanford knocked down a three pointer to get the Warriors within eight at 17-9. Over the final minute and a half, each team knocked down a three to make the score 20-12 in favor of California at the end of the first quarter.
- To begin the second quarter, the Vulcans stretched their lead to 10 on multiple occasions (22-12, 24-14, 26-16), until the Warriors trimmed their deficit to 26-20 with a Polin jumper. With California ahead 29-20 coming out of the media timeout, the Vulcans proceeded to score 12 of the 16 points for a 41-24 lead at the half.
- The Warriors opened the second half by scoring the first four points, but the Vulcans answered to regain a 45-28 edge with 4:50 to go in the period. Cal would continue to increase their lead as they outscored ESU, 10-5, the rest of the way to make the score 55-32 headed into the final 10 minutes.
- It was back and forth to open the fourth quarter as the Vulcans maintained a 64-40 lead through the first six minutes. The Warriors would go on to outscore Cal (10-5) to finish the game, but the Vulcans held on for the 69-50 victory.
